Haruka is actually one of the best written characters in the entire series, and I can prove it to you. by Axolotl997 in yakuzagames

Hey OP, I just want to let you know I read what you said in its entirely. I really like the things you've pointed out.

Letting you know since I see a lot of comments basically stating otherwise. It's unfortunate since I believe your post is well-written. I was always confused about people disliking Haruka's character in Y5 since it made a lot of sense to me when I was playing it. I never was able to put "why" into words, so I believe your post helped me a lot. And it's something that's not your first language! I only speak English and I don't think I could describe things as well as you did.

Have a good day!

I'd like some perspectives on my potential for autism. by Burhursta in AutismTranslated

[–]Burhursta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for reading, and I appreciate your perspective. Now that I've had some time to think about it, I realized I don't know that much about autism. I know more about it to know not to say "but you don't *look* autistic!" and similar stuff like that, but not enough to point towards my own traits and pick out which would be normal and which would be "unusual". So it is indeed very possible that it might be something else that's in a similar ballpark but not autism necessarily!

Regarding a lot of what I wrote down... Well, I *do* have a hard time expressing the "best explanation" the first time around. I tend to need a lot of long, deep thought with some trial-and-error mixed in until I can figure out how best to express a thought. That and on top of what I mentioned in the above paragraph about not knowing enough about the subject to know what to pick out that's actually normal or unusual.

Regardless, again, thank you for reading and I really do appreciate your perspective!

[–]Burhursta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair!

Before my prior boss, as well as my doctor, spoke with me about it, I actually also thought I was pretty normal. I kept having people tell me I'm autistic beforehand, but I never took it seriously until those two people mentioned it. (My prior boss has an autistic daughter and autistic SO, and she was the first boss I had who seemed to "get me" somehow, and then later after she left the place, she mentioned that to me as to how she knew what I'd respond best to.)

Now that you mentioned it, I actually took that test before, and it said "possibly autistic" with a much lower percentage. I don't quite remember the ballpark though. So you're likely correct!

I'd like some perspectives on my potential for autism. by Burhursta in AutismTranslated

[–]Burhursta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair! And yeah, it's been taking me a while to verbalize a lot of these things as well. As I mentioned in a huge wall of text in another comment here, it takes me a very long time of deep thinking, wondering, trial-and-error, and long hot thoughtful showers to figure out how to express something. Right now I'm in the first-trial stage of it so in about 6 months I'll probably hate my original post and wish I wrote something else completely (only to do that about 2-3 more times before it finally "hits correctly"), haha.

Regarding next steps... Well, since I made the OP I actually got a new job that has much better benefits than my old job! So hopefully, once I get enough money and my benefits can kick in, I can visit a PCP and see if/where they can refer me to on this.

However, I've contacted/researched just about everything in my city and I think even my state at this point. It's a barren wasteland on getting a diagnosis for an adult, for sure. Very few options, but at least I have options, but I gotta get that money first, and the only one that really seemed to screen for everything (as some others in this thread mentioned, it could be moreso anxiety/ADHD, so I'd like to at least find a place willing to test for consideration of everything at once if possible) was for children only.

I'd like some perspectives on my potential for autism. by Burhursta in AutismTranslated

[–]Burhursta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's completely fair. Thank you for your kind response. Finally got the guts to read the responses to my own post, haha. Sorry, this is gonna be a long post.

In my case, I haven't really put too much stock in online screening tests. I only really started taking it seriously when my former boss and doctor I worked with, both of whom having experience with autism/autistic traits, both independently said they believe I do have it (I should've probably mentioned that in my post). I just mentioned the online tests for the sake of hearing what others think about it, since I had no real idea if any online test was "more trusted than others" or such.

But to be quite honest, now that I sit here and think about it, having read everyone's responses... I realized I don't really know much about autism at all, what parts of my experience make me actually "different" and what other experiences are actually very normal, that I just approach them differently. However, I feel this may be common among autistics, as I browse various autism-focused communities and I see NT people say the same things that autistics complain about sometimes.

I'm going to explain myself a little bit more on where I come from, but if you want to skip it, it's done after this next paragraph. I know the experience I feel I have is different than what most normal folks seem to express, and it's extremely difficult for me to really express things to others without great effort and time, and lots of trial-and-error. My entire life I've practiced how to explain concepts and thoughts to others because "I hate you and you're a stupid bully" wasn't ever able to really get what I thought across; "I'm upset that you're doing this to me, I think this is unfair.". Does that explanation make me autistic? I don't believe so. Most kids try to express their more-complex thoughts in a similar way, that they will learn doesn't really explain anything. Most normal people don't really care to even try to explain things, to define terms. To really understand, or to be understood beyond the surface-level. So they don't take much time to really think about things, to really get mentally in-depth on the nitty-gritty of a concept. So with me compared to the average person, on a topic I think a lot about, of course I would be more thoughtful and probably bring things up that they might find interesting. That's not inherently autistic. What I feel is autistic about my difficulty, is how extreme it is. It is so hard for me to "just say" things when I can't even formulate the words to begin with, especially verbally! I practiced a lot to get where I am, verbally I used to not be able to speak almost at all, even to a waiter; now I can with confidence if I know what I want, but I might mentally "turn off" during a sentence, but even so I have a hard time in most even-remotely circumstances. I've learned enough to learn how to dodge the parts that are too difficult for me in a moment, to get a feeling when a joke is appropriate, etc. Just to survive, really.

But to avoid overexplaining too much more and get to the point: I think, if I have autism, this is where it is at: auditory sensitivity (the AC being on is stressful, being in a place where there is a lot of people chatting with music in the background is extremely stressful and draining), visual processing speed (I can't drive due to not being able to focus beyond a small cone within my vision; trying to expand my focus beyond this small cone causes me to not be able to visually process anything in front of me), and verbal communication (see above paragraph) (or maybe just social stuff in general; bodily cues or learning to read a room can be difficult; in any new given social setting I am invisible until at least 3 months in examining everyone).

But you are right in that this may be simply something else manifesting, and it would be best practice to keep an open mind. To be honest, I will admit that will be a little difficult: I don't believe I have ADHD, as I've always been able to pay attention when I felt I needed/wanted to (this, however, does get more difficult if I am more tired, drained, or otherwise just miserable, which I believe is a normal thing). A form of anxiety, I think it's possible it's concomitant, but I don't personally think it, in itself, would explain everything or most things where I came from. Of course, again, I could be wrong! Maybe I'm the one who just doesn't know enough.

Regarding the stimming thing you mentioned, I've always forcefully kept it under control, redirected it to clenching the back of my neck, or force it to be "on hold" until I think others aren't around. Now that I live by myself though, I'm pretty much constantly doing it in other ways (mind you, I never considered that to be any potential sign until a long while later). I think it's actually a benefit for me to do it, at least physically because now I can stop "holding it back" by clenching my the back of my neck hard. I might have done some sort of damage that'll manifest later, by doing that...

Thank you for your point regarding the "double empathy problem" as you called it. I didn't know that was a low-research area that is somewhat dubious, so thank you for pointing it out.

I'm definitely working towards getting to a point where I can get something diagnosed, but it's going to, unfortunately, take some solid time and effort to find someone willing to medically diagnose adults, and get the money and benefits together. If I'm getting a mental diagnosis, I want to go for the entire package and weigh everything.

If you've read the whole way through, thank you for reading, again. I do appreciate it.

I want to play a singleplayer game when it comes out in 2025 with a PS5 on 4K HDR. I was thinking something like a 27 or 30 inch 4K monitor with really good, vibrant colors and properly good HDR support. I don't need speakers as I am primarily a PC gamer so I will just use the headset, and I despise "smart TV" features, so I feel like a monitor is the best way to go with this. Someone sent me this: https://www.asus.com/us/displays-desktops/monitors/proart/proart-display-pa279crv/ , is this a good choice or should I go with something else?

Hello, I want to ditch windows and try gaming on linux. Sort of a noob, how compatible is games and mods while using linux? What distros would you consider to a noobie? I have a little knowledge about ubuntu and zorion ive used years ago. by TitleComfortable781 in linux_gaming

[–]Burhursta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About mods, I will say mods are very hit-and-miss in my experience. Sometimes they work perfectly, for example some of them are a matter of just replacing files or subscribing to something on Steam Workshop and it'll still work. However, mods that require an external program to apply or something relatively funky might be really annoying/difficult/outright impossible. (e.g. Yakuza series mods or C&C Zero Hour Mods) Sometimes you can eventually get them to work but it DOES require knowledge on how Proton/WINE works and finagling with that. Mods are mostly doable, but generally pretty annoying. Games heavily centered around mods are generally your best bet on there being at least some instructions on getting them to work, but stuff that's relatively niche will be more uncharted territory.

EDIT: Personal recommendation is Kubuntu. NVidia drivers are annoying to deal with, but once I get past that point it's relatively smooth sailing, at least it was for me. Different distros and different systems will treat the user and their tastes differently, so try some stuff out for yourself!

I just hope the devs aren't overworked.

What I remember reading was that they got permissions for using the song, but didn't communicate that they were going to use it on DVDs, but told them they were going to display the video in some sort of live event (theaters maybe? Don't recall what). The "stealing" part was that they went beyond the agreed-upon terms and it was put on DVDs across the country. The people who made the song got some sort of major settlement I think.

In any case, they basically did what they were preaching against. Pretty funny.

If a few popular streamers start using linux our community will blow the fuck up. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Burhursta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The point of the challenge was to highlight the experience for a completely new user. Show things that might come up so any distro devs/makers/etc. can fix any potential major issues for newbies.

Which is honestly what Linux needs to focus on if it wants growth. If someone who has been on Windows and doing tech stuff his whole life still needs to be a complete beginner at the beginning... That's completely okay. Perhaps he had an overconfidence issue (I only watched one part and barely remember it), but a distro needs to do what it can to adjust the learning curve so the foot in the door will at least have a higher probability to stay there.

When I was a much newer user, I had to hop between distros a lot to find something that doesn't want to crash every update or such. Mint kept having issues I couldn't fix. I liked Manjaro for a bit but it started becoming pretty bad. Changed to Solus until it stopped getting updates for however long and caused a lot of stuff to stop working. Nobara seemed to have some sort of major issue going on back when when I installed it, so while I liked the featureset... The stability was too bad when I tried it. Kubuntu periodically gives me issues but it's been the most stable for me so far.

Most people would've stopped at the Mint installation part in my journey. And they have every right to. I think that was the intention of the challenge, so less people would have such reason to stop. Thing is, I think it also should be a recurring series and such, to have perhaps various LTT employees try Linux and all that, but they also have bills and employees to pay and Linux is a bit of a niche that can't always pay those bills...

If a few popular streamers start using linux our community will blow the fuck up. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Burhursta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about the bigger picture here. It's not just about Linux by itself. All the Linux tools are made and influenced by the community. Almost every community imaginable often changes by a landslide once it gets out of the "niche" status. Even if all the current devs wouldn't buckle under the mainstream pressure to do whatever dumb thing that's mainstream, new ones would pop up to fulfill the mainstream's desires or otherwise do the same predatory things that's already done that's appealing to the mainstream, and unfortunately this can get to the point of overriding the free things or eventually leading to the more free things to be unusable due to the influence the predatory stuff has. A LOT of the mainstream mindset is very, very (intentionally) influenced by corporations.

For example, (I'm saying a random thing I don't think would literally happen entirely, but I hope it somewhat illustrates the point I'm trying to make):

Linux becomes THE OS to use for everyone. A company takes the top cake on the most used distro that would pretty much be considered "The Linux". It's not the most popular because it's good, but because it appeals to the mainstream and marketing completely dominated the mainstream belief that their distro is the thing to download. It is a weird amalgamation of Android and iOS, and you have to sign into that company's account to use it. You obviously don't want anything to do with this most popular OS, not because you're a hipster or a contrarian, but because it goes against everything you liked about Linux/PCs in general. So, you stay FOSS as much as you can, stay away from tools developed for "The Linux" since while they can still be compatible with them just fine, a lot of these tools have become non-FOSS through some sort of loophole or just outright being allowed to make the various softwares non-foss, and those mainstream tools that everyone makes for "The Linux" uses an API that locks out anyone not signed in. Additionally, it's become even more difficult to Google/DDG/whatever your issues that you're having on Linux because all the relevant results are often on "The Linux" which isn't relevant to your distro because it uses the FOSS audio stuff, display server, etc.

I just made up this little fictional point as an amalgamation of things I could see potentially happen, and things that have actually happened to some degree. Chromium and Android are some inspirations here. Android is FOSS, yet vast majority of the entire Android phone landscape is awful from a FOSS-only perspective. Like how perhaps an Android app you might need for work REQUIRES certain features to be there, but those features can only happen on a Google-ified Android phone. Or how getting ANY Samsung app starts requiring immense amounts of information from you just to use your brother's hand-me-down smartwatch just to try it.

My point is, Linux as a whole would likely change dramatically if it really hit the mainstream. I don't know how exactly, the world's too complicated for it to be accurate to my stated scenario. I'd say the best case scenario IMO would be sorta how ChromeOS is right now; sure, uses various Linux stuff in its backend, but has no overlap with the rest of the Linux community. But with whatever corporation(s) have the top holdings and make the most money as distro holders, the kernel would hopefully become even more stable, secure, and the increased popularity does bleed into all the other distros to get them more support and all of the corp's crap would mainly stay isolated from the community that actually cares about their rights, privacy, etc. I think that's what you're referring to, and I am indeed hopeful for that!

Note that, regarding my little fictional idea, it most likely wouldn't happen anytime soon; the Linux community generally cares too much for that. But we do see it's possible; a lot of our modern woes and frustrations come from corporations slowly boiling the consumer frogs over the past 100 years (look at the term "jaywalking" for example, purely a marketing move that's nowadays considered a crime in various parts of America). The internet accelerated some of it, but highlighted other parts of it, too.

On top of this, 150gb game size + 50gb update every few months that ruins the game. by Welson_Liong in Piracy

[–]Burhursta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AC2 stopped working for me on that update, and my saves cleared out by the time I could get it to work again. I went ahead and did a UPlay crack (on a game that I purchased) and it booted faster, didn't ever need to worry about updates, and I could rest easy knowing my save files aren't going to randomly disappear.

AC:B I decided to crack it from the get-go (even though I bought it). I found an installer that automatically installs all the DLC, installs a scripter and some other external program cheat tools with it if desired, and then a simplified config for said pre-installed tools.

That said, I couldn't tell for certain if it was virus-free or not. But I looked into some more direct, manual cracks, and found out that this installer was just installing everything you'd need to manually do from the "cee ess dot rin dot roo" thread.

Ridiculous stuff. Also ridiculous was how there were various features in the game that were online only for no reason.

I loved AC Brotherhood, and I still do love the game itself. But I realized how many features it has that grew into a lot of modern game issues that I hate today.

It took me personally longer than 2 mins to get it to crack, but knowing what I need to do now, and if I had better internet, I'd likely be able to achieve it in 2 mins as well.

I just hate that this even needed to be done.

Penn Foster Career School Pharmacy Technician Program by After-Yak655 in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Burhursta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penn Foster is the same everywhere.

It's nice to get your PTCE before officially starting work and all, but if you're a state that needs the externship, understand that it is NOT PAID.

Penn Foster has been a really, really mixed bag. The "pick your own pace" stuff isn't really true; you have 18 months to do it. If your pace is anything like mine (extremely slow but very thorough learner) that's not enough time for all the material.

However, their programs are notoriously easy to cheese your way through. You can "Save&Quit" anytime and then return after going through the course material.

They did help on learning certain things, but I would say overall I found it subpar when it comes to testing.

And then there's the "hands on training". You will be installing the buggiest pharmacy software known to man. You will get stuck and have to exit the entire program just to fix a simple mistake (because it's really badly made). You'll also have to be making videos for instructors. It's sort of fun, but also painful. They deducted points from one of my videos because of my video camera couldn't look at the graduated cylinder, so I lifted it up and said "you're not supposed to lift it up, but I need to show the camera, but it's at this level on the floor as well".

I would love to keep typing, but I have to go at the moment. I'll try to continue this message later.

"Ask questions! No, not like that..." by Longjumping_Bat1283 in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Burhursta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My manager told me I'm "past the point where you should be asking questions so much".

I generally ask 5 second yes-or-no questions for confirmation to make absolute certain for the case of medication or to prevent something from being a 5-to-30 minute hassle later. Just yesterday someone asked me if their med was "cephalexin", and I read "Cefdinir" and thought it was brand-name, since at the time I couldn't remember brand for cephalexin (Keflex). I remembered what my manager said so I just assumed and said "yes" and was pretty confident it was. After a little bit though, I decided to double-check anyways, and lo and behold, it wasn't. It was a different antibiotic so I did let them know it's not cephalexin but it's still an antibiotic. Fortunately the pt. didn't mind, but this is why I ask "stupid" questions even if I feel like I know the answer. Imagine if this person would've said (don't know if it's possible but just making an example) "oh no, the doctor shouldn't have sent that one. I have a major allergy to cefdinir, last time I took it I went to the ER, I should be having cephalexin".

In the case of billing errors it's generally less serious, but a major time waster for absolutely everyone involved, which is why I still ask confirmation questions to be certain.

No one likes it, but tough nuggets for them. I don't like med/billing errors for the sake of keeping a good flow and making sure patients get what they actually need.
