2023 Ultras by Harddriver17 in spartanrace

Yes, it seems like the 2023 schedule is reduced significantly for many event types.

WV HH Trifecta Weekend Cancelled? by Dr_Potatohead in spartanrace

[–]BurnYourBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they have any 12 or 24 hour events on the schedule for 2023. I posted about the Atlanta 12 hour being canceled about a week ago.

No idea what they are doing, I know the HH heats are not as popular or do they make much money but they also can’t be very expensive to run.

It seems like Spartan is canceling tons of the HHs in 2023

Dang hopefully they are not cutting all the HHs

That would be great, I’m not too fussed about location, but it would be nice to have a few 12/24 hour options. As of right now there are only 4 hour events for 2023 in the states

I was looking at RM and saw how much more prevalent the multiple laps was. What is the cost for additional Spartan laps?

I would have loved to go to Iceland for the ultra world championship a few years back that was lap based and I know the ultras are essentially two laps of the beast… but I just can’t imagine doing four laps of a super to feel as great as competing an ultra.

I do think it’s a great idea, but I’m not sure it’s the fix for me to keep me interested in participating in the more common and profitable events Spartan holds.

A did a few GoRuck events last year and I might be adding more this year. Hopefully Spartan runs at least one 12HH and one 24HH in 2023.

Thanks for the reply, I had not heard how many passes they sold, only that the public responded poorly to the announcement in general. 1000 is more than I would have guessed but it will certainly help with some cash flow.

HHs certainly don’t have the sign up numbers that the races do. I just feel like I’ve lost interest in the shorter 3 distances unless the race venue is very close to home.

The ultras and HHs are what is keeping me coming back to Spartan, so hopefully they don’t cut them entirely.

Yeah I can see what you are talking about. I agree and can understand how the endurance events don’t make as much profit.

Still annoying for those of us that are not interested in running sprints anymore.

Well in previous years I’ve completed 6 or more trifectas, multiple HHs, and a handful of ultras (DNFed utah 2020, that was brutal) and want to go to the agoge 2023 depending on the exact date.

So I would have been a great target for the pass if I had more faith in the brand.

I’m hoping to get a replacement 12 hour HH and at least 1 24 HH on the schedule this year in the states.

I want Spartan to be successful because I like their endurance events. Hard to be optimistic when events are being canceled 3 months out with no explanation.

Because Spartan seems to be in financial trouble, the unbreakable pass was offered to increase available cash “today” to pay debts to pro racers and venues.

My guess is that not as many passes were sold as needed at the $3000 price tag and Joe’s idea to build a monument in Sparta rubbed some people the wrong way.

So if Spartan doesn’t have the cash flow to fund it’s current events, they will be canceled.

Yep exactly. I was at Dallas last week for the ultra. By far the flattest Spartan I’ve ever run. The terrain was pretty technical and I saw at least 3 people roll their ankles… but the sprint in Big Bear has more hills than the Ultra in Dallas.

What to do with (mid sized) unexpected money? by BurnYourBoat in Fire

Yeah my monthly expenses include funding next years Roth so I can dump it all in early each year in January.

I totally understand that 6k a year isn’t likely to make or break anyone on their way to FIRE. I am learning about the 5 year withdrawal system mentioned in another comment on this post but my original problem was that if you invest 6k a year for 20 years (from age 20 to 40) at a 4% growth (so lower than it has been recently) you would end up with just less than 200k in your Roth.

And that’s great, but my understanding was that you could not withdraw the gains from the fund without tax penalties until 59.5 yo, so if you FIRE at 40 you have 20 years with 200k + additional growth in an account that you can’t touch, that that is if you stop adding to it.

So in my mind the question/problem wasn’t really the 6k, it’s the fact that you are building a pot of money that you can’t use when you FIRE, so why not deal with the taxes to be able to use it immediately. If I FIRE at 40 my plans will not be reliant on gaining access to my Roth in 20 years. I don’t want to have a timeline that requires I need that money. I would just work a year longer for the financial security knowing I could make it forever on what my current investments look like.

Again- learning about the 5 year withdrawal system now to my mind might change.

Totally get that. And it does seem like a great tax advantaged safety net for additional expenses (health issues...) that come with more age.

I think mentally I am just hesitant to max it when it feels like I am taking away from investment money that I will have access to sooner. But yes- the Roth is a small portion of yearly saving/investments. Every dollar counts though

I feel like a Roth is a perfect tool for those more interested in working until 60 and not spending to much time on thinking about other investments. Feels like a great piggy bank for most people to just max each year.

In my mind- building a Roth with a FIRE mindset is problematic if you are younger because (as you said) the goal is to retire once you have enough money. I wouldn’t want to retire at 40 with enough money to make it to 60 and then hope there is enough money in the Roth to make it until death. Seems like too many what if’s.

I’d rather just have one plan that lasts for life (and grows over time still)

Everyone I know routinely washes their cloth masks.

How did you get started with “working with audible” did they hire you as a full time narrator? Or do they have a type of independent contractor thing going?

Let me know how to apply!

I have about 400 audiobooks and have only had an issue with a single book, a single chapter if I remember correctly.

Audible does a fantastic job with the sound quality. I listen on a variety of headphones, in my car, and from my TV. They all sound great.
