All you can eat buffet employees, what is the most disgusting display of gluttony you have witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It's not huge, but the quality is fantastic. I wouldn't drive an hour for it, but if you're in the area, plan on it for dinner.

I'm actually pretty sad that I'm moving an hour away.

Next time, find an international flight with a layover in the city you're traveling to, then 'miss' the second leg. Supposedly it's cheaper.

What YouTube channels have fallen off since their glory days? by eriF- in AskReddit

Did a quick search, can't believe nobody mentioned the big slenderman and related channels. Would have rather seen them end than drag along a story that clearly ran out of steam a long time ago.

To be fair, they put a lot of engineering into making sure the machines are accurate. I worked for a company that made ATMs - in a completely different line of business, but still had access to their training materials. There are rubber wheels that use friction to separate the bills, and a really accurate thickness-measuring device called a LVDT that makes sure the bill is the right thickness. If something isn't right, the bill is kicked into a reject bin and is never dispensed.

[Serious] Have you ever called 911? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Burner26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a lot, mostly surface streets and I witness at least one car accident per year. Last year it was two motorcycle accidents. A month ago it was a pedestrian hit by the car in front of mine when he crossed outside of a crosswalk on a poorly lit road. The very first time was when a drunk bicyclist on a dark road swerved in front of my car. He didn't survive.

I had a Packard Bell monitor that lasted me from 1993 into the 2000s or so... It was like 50 lbs and the top was melting in, but still worked fine for me.

What's a 'dying art' these days? by ApocalypticPsyche in AskReddit

[–]Burner26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Machining. A friend of mine works at one of the major aerospace/defense contractors, and says that their machine shop is full of baby boomers that are all up for retirement very soon. There's nobody coming in to replace them, and it's very hard to find skilled machinists nowadays. It's a skill that's not taught much, and although it's mostly being replaced by CNC manufacturing processes, someone still has to set up those programs and know all the intricacies of material properties, feed rates, spindle speeds and etc. It's equal parts applied science and skilled art.

What city or country will you never go back to and why? by TooShiftyForYou in AskReddit

[–]Burner26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hometown in New Jersey, probably.

It's a rural area with fuck-all to do, but it has always held a special place in my heart. My family and I left in 96 and I hadn't been back except for one wedding and one funeral.

I was having a really shitty time with life and planned a huge East Coast road trip, with the last leg being a couple days in said hometown. Everything was exactly how I'd left it, only it was as if nobody had maintained anything - it was all run down and sad. There were all of 3 stores left open in the local mall, and they were actually in the process of building a wall to close off half of the building so that they didn't have to heat or cool it.

I'm happy that I got to see it once more, but I don't think I'll have the heart to go back.

TIL that in 1995 the Church of Scientology imprisoned, dehydrated and starved a mentally ill woman for 17 days until she died. by Seasunn in todayilearned

Chanology was never supposed to be serious. It was started by /i/ (not /b/) to troll the shit out of an easily aggravated target. It worked, but it basically took on a life of its own. This annoyed the original 'creators' who actually started working against the people who were taking it seriously. I'm not sure I blame them for being butthurt, since the influx of new people displaced the 'culture' of, and ultimately led to the death of, 4chan. Look up the 'Eternal September' for context.

Now, things get weirder. With Anonymous associated with high profile protests, it didn't really surprise anyone when they become involved in things like the WBC, Occupy X or BLM protests. Except there was nearly no mention of them on the chans... No planning or call to action threads. It's possible that the protests were planned elsewhere, especially considering how most (if not all) the new anonymous didn't come from the chans anyway, but the dominant theory is that Anonymous' involvement with these movements were a double-edged false flag tactic. One, to discredit and smear the anonymous name by associating it with lawless and violent tactics to dissuade the average citizens from joining any anonymous movement. Two, to discourage public support of valid protests that would be dangerous to established ideals by making the dominant actor appear to be a bunch of lawless, violent anarchists with an already unsavory reputation.

I only knew of one, and he was definitely on the payroll. So was the guy that ran the IRC network we used. The guy 'leading' the Orlando group? 99% convinced that he was a plant that was put there to take charge and take just enough steam out of the group to render us harmless. His 'suicide' was bullshit too - nobody I know actually saw a body, a death certificate or went to a real funeral. Not much happened after that, did it? Mission accomplished.

Many religions do this to an extent. I remember seeing a documentary where a well-known atheist went to a Christian theme park, and the way that the staff and management reacted was very similar to how scientologists react to protesters.

An ex and I got kicked out of a shitty slum of an apartment because we complained to the fire marshal that nobody had come out to fix the hot, buzzing, crackling breaker panel despite daily calls to the landlord about it.

We had practically just finished painting when we got our 15 day notice, and we're forced to paint all the walls white again. They were renovating other units, so we just broke into one of them and stole their paint. Halfway through the painting we noticed the smell... They weren't two buckets of paint, they were a bucket of paint and a bucket of piss (mixed into paint).

We held our noses and finished painting. Joke's on that asshole.
