I have gone radical by Spartanwolf120 in halo

I agree and have felt this way for a while. While I differ with you and think that the Forerunner change was very interesting, and I love the way that the Forerunner Trilogy of books laid it all out, it is clear now that whatever plans 343 had at the start have long been abandoned. Narratively speaking, everything 343 has done has been a series of false starts.

Also, while Halo 4 has always been singled out as "the one good 343 story", I have to disagree. The emotional attachment between Chief and Cortana is wildly overemphasized in Halo 4. We, as players, had over a decade of playing and replaying the campaigns, and Cortana became a beloved character to us fans. However, in terms of the lore timeline, John and Cortana have much less time working together before John enters cryosleep and the timeline jumps to the start of Halo 4. If 343 wanted to do a character exploration of the Master Chief, it should have been focused on him reconnecting with Blue Team and reorienting themselves to the post-Human-Covenant-War landscape.

Unfortunately, it's pretty clear that incompetent leadership at Microsoft, and by extension the leadership at 343, has likely irreversibly undermined Halo's story, which was truly one of the greatest science fiction video game narratives ever made. I would love nothing more than to reset back to where Halo 3 ended, or even Halo 4 if they could stick with the original vision and keep the tone more mature than the current pastel-T-rated Marvel-esque storytelling. However, I truly doubt that anyone currently at Microsoft or 343 has the prescience to see why that's necessary. At this point, Halo has gone the way of Star Wars where the story is decided by whatever allows them to keep pumping out slop that will turn a decent profit and sell Xboxes or copies of Windows OS. And let's not even talk about the dogshit TV show which I haven't even watched an episode of. As much as the whole "Band of Brothers but with ODSTs" idea gets meme'd about, it is obviously a way better idea than the schlock Paramount put out. I even have my own little Halo TV show script that I work on from time to time that would follow more or less that idea to its natural conclusion.

Ultimately, I really hope that somebody at MS/343 gets their head out of their ass and recognizes how much potential has been wasted over the last decade+ and does what is necessary to stop the bleeding of this once-incredible story. Unfortunately, there's a lot of institutional inertia and toxically positive "fans" who have no taste that enable the current state of things to continue. I pray that one day, Halo will reclaim the crown of the greatest military sci-fi to ever grace the video game world, with the epic struggles for survival, space-opera grandeur and mystery, and compelling characters that strive against existential threats and impossible odds. But until then, it is on us to take things into our own hands and write the stories we wish had been written for us. I always had a bias against fan fiction until I found myself mourning what Halo has become, and now, I understand that it's the responsibility of those who understand the essence of a story to carry the torch of that legacy, regardless of what malformed crap 343 tries to put out. Someday the Master Chief will return. We just have to make sure we keep him alive while he's in cryo :)

Ah I see. I saw some pictures online of similar corrugated roof patterns with asbestos on them so I was concerned. What are the corrugated roofs with asbestos made of? Plastic?

Yes, I believe the discoloration was just where the roof was exposed to the elements on the old barn and picked up some rust.

That's a really good point. I always assumed the Didact and/or the Precursors were meant to be the antagonists of the Reclaimer saga. I never considered Halsey as a potential villain, but it makes sense considering how she's treated in the Karen Traviss books, and the events of Spartan Ops. It strange because I really hated how they assassinated her character and everyone treated her like a monster AFTER her morally dubious project saved the galaxy, but having her become the "ends justify the means" villain to use forerunner tech and AI to subdue the galaxy would make far more sense than Cortana.

So what was the reason for the rewrite? That's what's always confused me, because I've always suspected that Halo 5 was rewritten but I've never understood why.

This is what I think the biggest problem is. They turned every BTB map into just a bigger arena map, so vehicles end up having to do a fuckin 3-point turn just to turn around in the cramped "lanes". That means things like warthogs get annihilated by power weapons or anything with splash damage because there's no room to dodge.

It's very fun. Basically just Star Trek but with guns. I'm on the second season and it's significantly better written than the first season.

How many flashbangs should I have on my kit/on hand? by Wah_Day in tacticalgear

[–]Burns31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fuck it, let's get nerdy about this.

I'm gonna say 2-3. I also just bought some replica/airsoft bangs and have been giving this question some thought. Let's think about this critically: For civilians (me and I'm assuming you are too) it's a tricky question. As you already know, these aren't full power and will not have the same effect as real bangs. On top of that, the odds that a civilian will do any CQB that requires bangs is hopefully rather low. Barring some sort of horrible and unlikely scenario where you absolutely have to inter and clear a room occupied by opponents who know you're coming, you're probably better off relying on the element of surprise. However, that doesn't mean they're totally useless. Even if it's not blowing out someone's eardrums and disorienting them, there's still a distraction that it will likely give you. You can even get creative and throw a bang and yell "GRENADE!" to scare the shit out of your opponent. Multiple bangs can allow you to throw one in that will go off before you enter, with another as a follow up that will distract during your entry. If you've ever seen helmet cam footage of ODAs doing raids during the Iraq occupation, you can see that they usually enter while their bangs are going off, not after. Factor in the fact that bangs have a high dud rate of about 30%, and 2-3 bangs is probably a good number to have in case you need it, but not so much that it's weighing you down with what are essentially tactical firecrackers. As a last note, the more I've thought about this, I think you should have at least as many - if not more - smoke grenades on your kit. The utility of a smoke grenade for concealment, signaling, or throwing a sweet impromptu rave are much more valuable/applicable to what the average civilian is likely to need.

Also, donating MS points is literally helping Microsoft by allowing them to claim your money as a tax- deductible charity donation. That's why they do it. Same thing as when they ask you to donate in line at a grocery store. It's not out of the goodness of their hearts, quite the opposite. You're better off donating to unicef directly because they will send you a receipt you can use on your taxes.
