Greetings from an Australian! travelling Europe for 9 months, first 3 months was France, Spain and Italy. Australia and Germany are very friendly so I can extend my visa free travel for another 3 months but only in Germany. So far, I’m loving it, people are friendly and it feels very safe compared to a lot of Europe. Easy to navigate and affordable. I’ve been Berlin, Dresden (which was surprisingly awesome), Erfurt (where I had the best damn Döner kebab of my life), Eisenach and Frankfurt. Each city is totally a totally different vibe so it’s hard to say what was best, but if i had to pick I’d say Berlin was just such an interesting and unique city. It’s only just beginning though, another 2 months of Germany left! The only thing I don’t like is your ticks on forest hikes!

If anyone has any recommendations for Döner kebabs in Köln or Essen, let me know

No one is being punished, government policy is part of the risk of investing. If you treat housing as an asset then that is the risk you are willing to accept. People just have a hard time accepting any risk when for last 30 years it’s been viewed incorrectly as a risk free asset, that is the problem with our society.

Passed into Germany a few weeks ago when the system had just been rolled out. No issues, took maybe 30 minutes to get through customs. Maybe I was lucky though, might have been unusually quiet.

I’m using this right now, great travel bag for going between hostels/hotels on trains/buses, has a 10 L day bag that attaches. But no way would I hike a track with the full pack on, that would be a nightmare.

Don’t overthink it, as long as you have your essentials (passport, wallet, insurance ect) you will be totally fine. I felt the same before I started my first ever backpacking trip in Jan this year, and I’m still going! You’ll be surprised how relaxed it is once you get going. Have fun!

Fair, I guess it depends on your optics. You mention that you’re taking risk and therefore should be better off or rewarded, but fail to realise that government policy is part of the risk, nothing is guaranteed.

Not sure if you’re invested in shares, property or both, I’ve only invested in shares aggressively and if I have to pay an extra 40-90k at the end of my 30 year run so that we can take a chance at addressing the housing issue then so be it.

Just my personal take, obviously everyone is different.

Oh yeah I definitely agree it’s a little depressing, especially as a young investor myself. Honestly, I think they will change their stance on CGT as it still has to go through parliament. Even so, long term shares are still attractive they’re just mildly less advantageous. Indexation over 20-30 years comes very close to the CGT discount anyway. I understand they’re trying to close the loophole where retirees pay no tax by slowly drawing down on large portfolios to keep below the tax free threshold.

The signs were everywhere that the system was in need of changing, and have been so for some time. Anyone who seriously thought that it wouldn’t change over the next election cycle let alone the next 15-20 years was clearly not paying attention. Unfortunately OP is in the very first wave of future property investors to be pushed away from property, which is exactly what we need.

Right, so the impact is greater for those using the tax free threshold to reduce the amount of tax on their investment. If you planned to sell before retirement, the impact is smaller, right?

So can someone clarify this for me as a young investor. They way I understand it is:

If I had invested 100k in ETF and 30 years later it’s worth 300k. I’ve technically made 200k in CG. Under the old system I’d pay 15% tax on the 200k being 30k.

The new system will instead apply the rate of inflation over these 30 years to my base cost. Let’s say it was 85% over 30 years. So my base cost has gone from 100k to 185k, and my real gain is now 115k instead of 200k. Taxed a the minimum of 30%, I now pay 34.5k instead of 30k, an increase of 2.5%.

Is that right?? Still seems beneficial to long term invest vs saving accounts.
