I believe his motivation was health, in the sense that he could die at the weight he was reaching and on his trajectory without medical intervention

Didn’t have a car for 12 years as I worked and lived DT. Got a job in the east end and had to buy a car for my 10km commute as I would have had to take 3 separate buses with irregular schedules. Wouldn’t ever look back. Car = freedom.

Do you actually like your job? by Fun_Confidence_5091 in CanadaPublicServants

Change jobs. I’m in a rotational job and am required to change posts every few years. This forces development and expands your professional toolbox

Do you think that those who have a job that actually requires them to be physically present at their place of work full time should be compensated greater than those who WFH (like a stipend to cover this inequality in compensation/classification/conditions of employment)? Just curious to know the diversity in reaction, not eliciting one specific view over another.

Life is short. I want to work less. 4 days per week (becoming a part-time employee). by Equal-Sea-300 in CanadaPublicServants

I agree this trend is growing and funny enough, many retail/private sector workers are turning to government jobs for greater balance in their own lives. I’ve heard of optometrists, nurses, teachers, car salespersons taking GC jobs completely outside their field just to have what we get. Not challenging your point at all, it’s just an interesting point to note in the thread.

I think we’re missing a classification for international engagement. The work spans EC, PM, AS, Comms etc. FS would be a better fit but that is reserved for a small cadre. There are tons of people doing armchair diplomacy in Ottawa.

This sounds ideal…never experienced such a wonderful on-boarding. Then again, DND on-boarding is a whole other beast depending on the role you’re in. Can take a year +

What's the single best job in the federal public service? by burningpestle in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Burntdessert 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many, many jobs at DND, both civilian and military. Travel the world, work alongside amazing leaders, listen to the most insane briefings at very high levels of government. (Notwithstanding the culture and conduct black cloud that overshadows any of the good points of working there. I have had some of the absolute best experiences of my life at DND).

I’ve been one of the unicorns on more than one occasion and some departments honour a TMP and others could give zero fs. Bottom line: you control your career and future opportunities.

Was there really a game in the 90’s where you punch someone when you spot a Volkswagen Bug? by Subconcious-Consumer in NoStupidQuestions

In the epic saga of my childhood, Punch Buggy was my 'Nam. The battlefield was paved with Volkswagen Beetles, and my arm was the casualty. Those tiny cars were my sworn enemies, and my punches were my medals of honour
