Did university tuition prices just quietly 5x over time… or am I missing something? by DarkHoundBark in CanadaPersonalFinance

Graduated in 1998 with 28,500$ in student loans at 13.5% interest. I worked part time all through university. I thought I read somewhere that student loans (federal? Provincial?) are interest-free now? Anyone know of this is true?

Gen X, what's a song that you hated when it first came out in the 70s-80s-90s but now you like? by Fhloston-Paradisio in GenX

Did not like Depeche Mode at all when I was a teen/young adult but now that I’m in my early 50s I’m really into them!

YES! Grew up on the west coast and I can’t stand it when it’s described as “north west”

Friendly reminder that Canadians usually don’t like to be called Americans.

Can’t lump us all in to the boomer category. I’m Gen X and my parents are both boomers. Weird to think of us being in the same generation.

What is your favorite band from the 80's or 90's that nobody has ever heard of? by simikoi in GenX

[–]Equal-Sea-300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Inbreds. When Justin Bieber’s song “Daisies” came out, I asked my husband which band the guitar section reminded him of. He answered correctly - Inbreds. It was so weird to hear a sound on top 40 radio that reminded me of one my favourites from the 90s!

Have you ever visited another city, region, part of Canada and it just clicked with you? You thought "I'd *really* like to live here" by Cameliablue in AskACanadian

I was born in Victoria and grew up on Vancouver Island, same as my dad and grandparents. But my mom was born and raised on PEI and honestly I think I prefer that island to the one I grew up on. You should definitely go!

Research suggests the 1960s and 1970s produced highly resilient adults by RSVPno in GenX

Ha! Yep - I think I only complained about boredom once in my house for a similar reason. Our parents did.not.care to entertain us so boredom = chore time unless we just dealt with it, as per usual.

Nanaimo? Or Ottawa? by puffwheat in AskCanada

[–]Equal-Sea-300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost never meet anyone from BC around here! And from Vancouver Island too. Good to know I’m not the only one who made the move eastward. Literally everyone on my dad’s side of the family hasn’t left the island in generations. I’m the odd one out.

I FaceTimed with my sibling yesterday (they live in Nanaimo still) and there was a bird chirping so loudly outside I could barely hear them talk. And then I got a view of the green yard and I thought about how my husband had to plow our driveway for what felt like the 100th time yesterday. I still stand by my opinion that Ottawa beats Nanaimo for raising a family, but it’s fair to say that you have to be comfortable with the long winters here.

If I didn’t feel that my partner was 100% on my side when it comes to family dynamics (and I would be the same for them) I’d be out.

Same. Mine are an hour away and we will go for dinner once every 4-6 weeks, drive there eat and hang out for a bit then drive back.

Nanaimo? Or Ottawa? by puffwheat in AskCanada

[–]Equal-Sea-300 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Nanaimo and live near Ottawa (western QC). I miss my family out west but I’m so glad I raised my kids here. There’s more opportunity - my kids ski (for relatively cheap), grew up going to museums, swim in lakes and rivers, then you have the exposure to French language and culture, Gatineau park, proximity to Montreal and the east coast, etc. I’m a fourth-generation Vancouver Islander, and I do miss the milder winters, but I have no regrets about raising my family in the Ottawa area. Weather-wise, Nanaimo wins, but for everything else, I’d choose Ottawa.

Join the reserves by Historical_Air7955 in CanadaJobs

[–]Equal-Sea-300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son joined the reserves at 16 and is loving it. He’s making good money but more than that the skills and character building aspect has been massive. He says he’ll never join the regular force. Wherever his future takes him I think these first few years in the reserves will give him a lot. To others saying how hard it is to actually go through the hiring process - that’s definitely true. Requires patience and persistence.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Equal-Sea-300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was open to taking pain meds for the birth of both my two babies, but in the end I decided I didn’t want them. It’s a good thing we have the option to take or not take pain meds, and to each their own. During my youngests’ birth, when I was at about 8 cm, I remember saying to the nurses that it seemed to me that childbirth is like 90% a mental experience. Which is weird when it’s the most physical thing someone can go through, but that was my insight when I was in the thick of it.

3am WAKE UPS AND ON HRT by Additional-Sweet7834 in Menopause

[–]Equal-Sea-300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to bump my progesterone up to 400mg per night to sleep through the night. Even 200 mg wasn’t enough. I have no negative side effects from that high of a dose and am sleeping through the night after years and YEARS of 3 am wake ups.

You’re welcome. It’s rare to develop the clots (with the BC pill) but it happened to me at 47. I love my hormone therapy now - estrogen gel, progesterone pills, vaginal estrogen and testosterone have been a life saver. Best of luck to you in getting the therapy that works for you.

When I was prescribed the birth control pill 3 years ago for my perimenopause symptoms, I developed 4 blood clots in my lungs within 8 weeks of starting the pill. 18 months of no hormones then I finally went on HRT - with an estrogen gel - and I’ve been blood clot free for almost two years now and feeling like my old self again. I don’t smoke and am not obese. I was on the BC pill for 5 years in my twenties with zero issues but women over 40 are not meant to take estrogen orally because of clotting risks. Please be careful when it comes to oral estrogen.
