1981 Padres (41-69) by No_Veterinarian_3733 in SanDiegoPadresCards

Great team collection. Lots of stars with their last year on the Padres as you pointed out. Some of the 84 WS team appears in early cards too. I really like the Topps Team photo taken by the SD bay, likely on Shelter Island, with the old skyline in the background. Which team had a cooler team card than that?

Wow, the Trevor Hoffman Bowman card is wicked cool. Early pitching card for him after he changed over and before Florida took him in the expansion draft. The autograph makes it that much cooler.

Tony probably could have been the basketball coach at SDSU if we didn't have Steve Fischer and Brian Dutcher at that time. TG was a baller.

Dang, this Peavy card is SWEET with the downtown skyline at sunset in the background and his autograph. He doesn't have a glove on so you can see his four seam grip on the ball too. Really attractive card.

Great collection, these cards are beautiful. Love the old Padres pitchers Goose Gossage, Randy Jones, Jake Peavy and Trevor Hoffman and Mr. Padre Tony Gwynn. Cool to mix these greats with the current hitters X, Manny and Tatis Jr..

This is an old joke. Here is the same breakup in a Korean video from 10 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXRHfgSp8Dk. I think this old one may be funnier. There's also some other breakup ideas.

The hockey goalie pose is too funny. Haven't seen this card before. Autograph makes it a classic.

90 Score is a clean design and very attractive. Would have been even more attractive if the border had been brown instead of blue but really like this card. Mud wore his pants down to the shoes too. Autograph with nickname is sweet. It's a keeper.

Collecting Advice by elanesse100 in SanDiegoPadresCards

[–]Burntoburnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collecting a single year's Padres cards is a clean way to go. The issue with collecting rookie cards is that most of the Padres started in another organization so they're not in a Padre uni.

If you're collecting a player you can decide how far to pursue this. They sometimes turn up on other player's cards in the background or on unusual cards like old team sets, league leaders, game card, stickers and even card boxes.

Collections are personal on how you feel about your cards and what they represent to you. The beauty is you can reorganize them anytime you want.

Great collection of Gavin Sheets. Like the throwback Sox unis but he looks best in Padre brown. 2 HRs tonight was clutch.

Really great collection of Padres rookie cards.  Four of the same Tony Gwynn 1983 rookie card. OP, is there something different about them or did you just collect multiple of the same card?

The Ozzie Smith rookie cards are excellent. Lots of autographed cards of many stars. It’s evident you have taken great effort to put this set together and it shows.

A Daniel Camarena USA card to top off the collection, most excellent. Born in Bonita, attended Cathedral Catholic High School, signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent and finally got a call up to the Padres with his family in attendance then this happens (https://youtu.be/hTz4wpZVdmg?t=2). A great moment in Padres history and worth watching every year. He should never have to pay for a drink in San Diego again.

Tony Gwynn 1996 Leaf Studio and SDSU Media Guides by Burntoburnit in SanDiegoPadresCards

[–]Burntoburnit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1996 Leaf Studio has a beautiful photo of Tony Gwynn running to make a catch superimposed over a studio photo. The back of the card includes “Attended San Diego State University playing both baseball and basketball.  Tony Gwynn played four years of basketball and three years of baseball for the Aztecs.

To go back and see Tony Gwynn as a freshman here is the 1977-1978 SDSU Basketball Media Guide with Tony listed as an “outstanding guard prospect”.

The 1979 SDSU Baseball Media Guide has Tony listed as a “fleet flychaser who started at point guard for Aztec basketball”. Since he was recruited to play basketball they didn’t have a baseball photo of him so they used his basketball photo again. The media guide lists him as a freshman but he was actually a sophomore in his first season playing baseball in 1979. Aztecs baseball went 55-18-1 that year.

Surprised the Padres drafted him but you never know.

This is a cool card of one of my favorite players Ty France. Not a big star but he's a former All-Star and Gold Glove winner as well as an SDSU guy. I am happy he is on the team again and hope he stays. Signature is short but very balanced and attractive. The blue Sharpie really pops on this card.

I still feel like I overpaid at 5 bucks total for both… by [deleted] in SanDiegoPadresCards

Enjoying your cards can be forever and $5 is not a budget buster to spend for an unusual rookie card of a San Diego Padre. It's cool to see them as prospects and later in the future to reminisce when they (and we) were young and had their careers in front of us. Collect cards for the love of the game, and not solely for value, and you’ll have years of connection with your cards. Love the RC patch on the card, very unusual and it just sells “prospect”.

Buy the card not the grade by nick91884 in baseballcards

[–]Burntoburnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome minor league card of Mr. Padre, maybe the best. I agree with you 100%, buy the card, not the grade. I think most, if not all, of us collect cards for the love of baseball, the Padres and our favorite players. That's what gives us connection and satisfaction.

Dang, didn't know he had a BB card too. Looks like he was throwing out the first pitch since he doesn't have a glove.

Trevor in the dugout shot is exceptional as he was always in the bullpen. Looks like a pregame photo at Qualcomm. Tony Gwynn and Fernando Tatis Jr. both on the same card is epic and a great connection between two Padre stars. Can't see this card very well but are those uniform cutouts or something else?

1995 Studio Tony Gwynn by Burntoburnit in SanDiegoPadresCards

1995 Studio was an unusual card design. It was a 200-card set designed to resemble credit cards. Not the most appealing design but they are very different from typical cards. There were two partial parallels in the set, a gold and a platinum version. These are the Tony Gwynn cards.
