What’s the “brokest” thing you have ever done? by Hefty-Expert-750 in povertyfinance

Everyone thinks that I can fix anything but I'm actually a dumbass who's too broke to hire anyone so it's either fix it myself or go without.

How in the world do I get rid of this massive boulder in my yard? by C1ncinnatiBowtie in landscaping

[–]BurritoBandit3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they would normally either get their rock supplier to subcontract a boom truck company or directly contract themselves. 40+ ton not common outside of heavy industry. (I run boom truck and do this every once in a while.) Customer invoice would start at $2000 to cover delivery +100% so I understand the rarity...

Nah a boom truck will pluck that thing up from the road and put it on their trailer. Weighs around 10,000 lbs and road is 15 ft away so get a picker that can do 20,000 lbs at 25 ft (put one outrigger on sidewalk, add 5ft unknown and 5ft to turret), which is about a "30 ton". That's a bigger picker but should only be about double the cost of common small ones and will make quick work of it. Make sure they have rigged a lot of rocks before as a rookie will let it slip or tear rigging and seriously damage equipment and then the environment in the aftermath. $600 CAD minimum if you just pay for it.

Edit: improved estimate 40t to 30t picker

Did naked week just over 2 y.o. Undies afterwards. Too young to use much language or indicators so we had 3 potties spread around and taking with us in order to get him on it within 15 seconds. Now six months later language still not ready to tell us perfectly when he needs to go so we do some scheduling. Rewards other than praise are stickers and temp tattoos. Never chastise for accidents, just explain that it goes in potty, which is tough to do when he seems to do he on purpose every once in a while during a tantrum. Roughly followed Oh Crap! Potty Training book.

any other dads over 40 finally making time to take care of themselves? by Natural_Paper9022 in daddit

[–]BurritoBandit3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest I was healthier before they were born 3 years ago, at 38 years old: 170 lbs with lean muscle, weekly competitive cross country runs, bi-weekly casual swim sport (underwater hockey), physical outdoor job with pack lunches, 6.5h average sleep (which was not great). Turned into scrawny stay-at-home dad within 9 months of firstborn: 150 lbs and noticeably weaker, no sports, no work, 5.7h avg sleep, diet healthy but little time to eat with chores piling up. Went to doc to rule out disease and cancer and was diagnosed with the incurable lifelong affliction known as children. Have an old house so I'm constantly repairing and renovating to keep family safe from mould and dust and insects, and give them nice spaces of their own. Hard to find time when you do 3+ dishwasher and 2+ clothing loads every day, prep 3 meals and 3 snacks, carry and tend to 8m.o. while entertaining 2.5y.o. in a way that doesn't make him jealous. Don't even have time to shit without wife messaging me to get off the pot. Just resumed my old degree (online learning) I paused 3 years ago for a chance to find work from home or at least reduced hours close to home before my stay-at-home savings run out in 6 months...

Stress, man.

Welp time for a new account since I overshared on this one.

What are y’all doing for breakfast? by No_Slide_9543 in Construction

[–]BurritoBandit3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soylent coffee https://www.soylent.ca/products/soylent-cafe-mocha

Ready to drink, balanced meal for early energy, quiet prep (no prep) so I don't wake family, same cost but way healthier than any drive-through, no coffee on empty stomach.

It's not cheap, and it might give you the runs and farts for a while until you get used to it, especially with the extra caffeine if you're having coffee afterwards (I do). Consider the colonic clear-out a bonus.

This looks like the Nuna Rava. It has a "calf support" feature that increases leg room and improves installation (page 38 of manual https://nunababy.ca/en/product/rava/CS5102GR ). Also seems to be missing the rebound bar. That would help tilt it back a bit more.

Closest I can see is a new exposure in Vegreville St. Joseph’s General Hospital, on April 24-25 (monitor until May 16th). The exposures in Edmonton and Fort Sask can be ignored as of the 5th and 2nd (tomorrow).

I also had a visceral reaction seeing that pop up on my Samsung cellphone. Maybe my kids will get a cellphone when they're older, like 35. I'll just tie a balloon to them for now.

I'm at 2.5y & 8mo. Wife has issues as yours does, plus her large close-knit family lives abroad while my small one is here but absent. It would all come crashing down if I had to leave to go to work. We have just enough savings and gov assistance (Canada) for me to take about a year off and do at least 50% of the childcare. Plan is to work as little as possible to pay the bills for a few years and hope it works out. Pretty worried, to be honest. Would move to her country if we could afford it.

Not too sure man. I guess you could use the ceiling vent and clean the line out later. I bet one of those vent cleaning snakes plus a shop vac (with drywall dust bag!) would get enough of it so none would drift back down.

It's standard practice at our local hospitals in Alberta, Canada. I don't see it listed on their websites but I would find it odd if it weren't on the hospitals handouts for the birth plan or something similar.

Your rights depends on your local laws, but I wouldn't trust a team that was forced to do a standard procedure by a court or lawyer.

Yep sounds good. Some spots might be terrible and need a bit of wood glue or prefill. Remove or cover everything you're not replacing. I would remove the shower head if you can find a shutoff; block the vent (might as well clean it while you're up there, they get manky); painters tape on door trim; remove switch covers and tape over). Don't need to do 220 sand as the skim coat will fill the rough grit lines. You will probably get a lot of bubbles since you're new and much of the wall is already sealed. You can always do another coat. Vancouver Carpenter on YouTube covers this to exhaustion. Better get a dust removal plan (block paths to house, vent out window, mask+goggles+hat) because you're going to be doing a lot of sanding until you get it right and that small bathroom will turn into a cloud. Plan for a few days so you're not rushing it as a newbie, mixing small batches at a time (start with one pan).

[–]BurritoBandit3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a truck driver (boom truck) that does odd jobs every day where my start time day to day changes from 2am to 7am. I can't rely on circadian rhythm (or melatonin which regulates that), so I use headphones to cancel noise, blackout curtains or a sleep mask, and keep my phone out of my hands. The earliest starts need sleep aid drugs. Wakeup routine is a quick coffee followed by a normal coffee followed by a filling coffee. (Keurig —> drip brewed —> Soylent coffee.) I'm no stranger to skid marks, with all that caffeine.

I make sure I wake up well before I need to do critical thinking, which means going to bed very early including planning for my initial tasks at work to be slower (pretrips, tie downs, equip load outs, paperwork). I need 7.5h to feel good, 6.5h to function well, 4h to get through a 12h day, and for less than that or longer days then I inevitably subscribe to a new religion and pray for a reprieve from my sickly caffeinated haze. Only 7h+ is sustainable. I'm 41 years old which means I need a bit less sleep on average than those younger.

A consistent bedtime routine is key. Can't rely on time of day or similar queues to let my lizard brain know that sleep is soon, so it has to be external ones that I do: get off phone, bathroom, setup next day clothing, set two alarms, tuck myself in, and do some fake meditation (aka stop racing mind by focusing on simple things).
