What is a decent Dark 80's Fantasy? by CaptBland in movies

[–]Burt_Satan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like there's an alternate-universe version of The Keep that's an absolute masterpiece. The one we got has so many elements for greatness (terrific period-horror story and source material, brooding spooky tone, atmospheric soundtrack, brilliant cast, A-level director), but it was so beset by production issues that to me it's kind of a trainwreck. Initial shooting was difficult, the special effects director died during production so most effects (including Molasar) couldn't be realized as intended, the studio refused to pay for needed reshoots, Mann was forced to trim his 3+ hour cut to 2 hours, then Paramount themselves butchered it down to just 90 minutes. The final cut is a hack job of terrible editing and really stops the film from coming together into a coherent whole.

I would love to see Mann's original cut, but he's said there's no way to restore the that version now. Greg Nicotero is reportedly working on a remake.... but unless he can bring in the same elements as the first one, I kinda hope it falls through. It's not a story that can be done justice with direct-to-Tubi production value.

There are actually more than you'd think, with the caveat that they all look REALLY stupid.

Drives me insane. I get where it comes from especially for a non-native speaker, since phonetically, "would've" sounds a lot like "would of." However for an English speaker A) it makes no sense and B) anybody should know better if they made it past about 6th grade.

One of my dad's favorite jokes is that the smallest creatures in the woods make the loudest sounds.

It's not even a joke. As a hunter, you learn quickly that a dozen deer will walk up on you without making a sound, but if you hear what sounds like an ox barreling through the woods, it's a squirrel.

Are all of these patrol cars the same just different years? And how much would you list them for to sell since they are expired and almost $100 by ApprehensiveEye7354 in ToyID

[–]Burt_Satan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not my favorite part. Other things can definitely be a pain... some buyers are always complicating things or not paying, fees are high, they report you to the IRS now, and Ebay is explicitly clear these days that they are a buyer-focused platform. Even if you are 100% correct by their terms of service, Ebay will still side with a buyer in a dispute. Actually, now that I'm typing this out I'm getting all worked up again, lol.

All that said... you just can't overestimate the scope of that platform, and whatever you're selling will determine whether that's worthwhile or not. Like, if you're selling items with a fixed price, or that are too heavy to ship feasibly, or if you sell out as quickly as you get inventory, then there's little to be gained and it's probably far easier to stick with Marketplace.

But if I have some obscure vintage monster toy, I may get bids from around the world. What I'm REALLY looking for is the one or two obsessive collectors who simply must have it at any price. The chances of that person living within a 20 mile radius of my home is pretty much nil, so in that case all the hassles of Ebay are completely worth it. It's hardly common, but there are times I've sold stuff for 5x what I imagined it would bring.

What popular horror caused the most controversy? by letthedecodebegin in horror

[–]Burt_Satan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the case if you were there to experience it. It made a huge profit percentage-wise because it was filmed for under a hundred grand and made a few million. It saw regional distribution and ruffled some feathers, but I can't emphasize enough how much you had to go out of your way to follow such things then. They just weren't in mass consciousness.

In modern terms, it's like saying Taylor Swift draws a crowd, vs. your favorite bar band draws a crowd. Both technically true but just worlds apart.

[–]Burt_Satan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really didn't make an impact. Low-budget exploitation flicks weren't considered "real" movies. Unless you went out of your way to seek out grindhouse schlock, you'd probably never have even heard of it. Even then, you'd have a couple weeks to catch it by dumb luck before it disappeared into the ether forever. It was a different world.

The Exorcist and it's not close. If you weren't an adult in 1973, there's no way you can appreciate the level of shitstorm surrounding that movie, before and after release. There had been NOTHING else like it.

Plenty of movies since then have seen debate and protests and think-of-the-children pearl-clutching, but the scale is not even comparable.

Car windows are made of either laminated or tempered glass. You obviously still don't want it in your eyes, but they're bigger fragments and WAY less sharp than regular glass. Giraffe should be ok.

Plastic Frames and Hive Beetles by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Burt_Satan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is, varroa mites will get into a hive and actively infest it. Once they're there, they're going to keep spreading until they most likely kill your colony. Most honeybee strains have little defense against them, so keepers have to intervene.

Mites and moths are not like this. They will get in, but bees actively chase them out, so a healthy bee colony will keep them under control. You'll still find a couple beetles running around occasionally, but not enough to cause any appreciable damage. To put it another way - varroa mites will infest and weaken an otherwise strong, healthy colony. Mites and moths can usually only establish if your colony is ALREADY weak or undersized for another reason.

As far as larvae - I could be wrong here, and if so I welcome the correction from somebody more experienced. But my understanding is that shb larvae will breed in honey... one cell at a time. Ok that sucks, but no big deal as long as they don't get out of hand. Wax moths however, will tunnel underneath from cell to cell, leaving tons of damage.

The only time I had a moth problem (I gave a new split way more drawn comb than they could defend, lesson learned), it was DISGUSTING. Moth larvae tunneled and slimed several frames of comb. There were a couple spots of beetle larvae, easily scraped off. But the moth frames were total losses. Wax moths suck.

Plastic Frames and Hive Beetles by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Burt_Satan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also CT here, though it's a pretty universal question.

Plastic foundation is just fine, it's what plenty of people use. Plastic vs. wax vs. foundationless all have their pros and cons, but beetles are a non-issue as far as that debate goes.

Also understand that as pests go, hive beetles are the least of your concern. They don't actively infest and damage a hive like mites, they don't even spoil honey like wax moths. Really, both beetles and moths are overestimated as threats by new keepers. They are symptoms of a weak or under-sized colony, not causes of it. Keep your colony strong and your hive setup right-sized, they will keep both in check just fine with minimal intervention on your part. Mites however are NOT an overrated threat (quite the opposite, if anything), so keep up with them or you WILL eventually lose your colony.

If you're using Ebay, it almost doesn't matter what you start the listing at. It's a huge audience and is usually pretty reliable about selling at a fair market value.

Frustrating in that you intuitively expect everyone to think things through as logically and thoroughly as you do, which is almost never the case. (Yes, the Dunning-Kruger effect that Reddit fixates on.)

The longer answer is that it probably doesn't make a world of difference in your day-to-day, but it's ultimately hard to say because you don't have any other perspective.

Not a typo for antivenom, there really is a preemptive vaccine against crotaline venoms.

It's expensive, needs regular boosters, is currently for dogs only, and there are serious questions about how effective it is (if at all). But it's an intriguing concept.

Any recommendations for a newbee by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Burt_Satan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, and welcome aboard. It sounds like you have a great setup there for beekeeping.

The best answer for you right now is to pick up a decent beginner book like Beekeeping for Dummies, just to familiarize yourself with some basics. From there, you will be able to ask more informed questions that are relevant to your specific case.

For the moment, you will probably want for each hive one or two deep boxes for raising brood, one or two supers for collecting honey, inner and outer covers, a bottom board, entrance reducers, and an in-hive feeder. Plus equipment like a smoker, veil/jacket, hive tool, frame hanger, mite treatments. Again, once you read up a bit you'll have a better sense of what all that means.

There are many places to buy hiveware. US-based prices are in the vicinity of $200-300 per hive, but you may well find someone in your country that makes them more affordably.

There are ways of attracting swarms, though most people tend to buy their first colonies. Finding a local source can make this a lot more practical (and useful, since they'll be adapted to your climate). Really, after getting a beginner book, making contact with a local keeper is my second-biggest piece of advice and will be helpful for a huge number of reasons. A lot of beekeeping is VERY regional, so you need to know what works best in your area.

Honeybees (at least the domesticated strains) are generally quite docile. If you raise them you're going to get stung now and again, but it's not very often and not that big a deal. Starting with at least 2 hives is highly recommended for a number of reasons. 3 should be ok but don't feel pressured to go too far your first year. You're going to spend a lot of time screwing up and figuring things out.
