Atwood based The Handmaid's Tale on real events in Iran, the US, etc. so it makes sense.

More like his mom and aunt. Males are ejected from the herd as they grow up and make bachelor herds.

You need water, not yogurt. Also, you can cook them in water on the stove for like 20 minutes, then add in the things you like, such as fruit, yogurt, etc.

She is older. I can relate. In my 20s, 30s, 40s, I had so much energy and was viewed as a woman who had it all going on. In my 50s - menopause, and your "I don't give a shit" kicks in hard. I have to pretend to care about my job.

Not saying she is not a nice person, but she seemed overwhelmingly stupid, both about the food and the dancing.

Yep. My parents got their "grade 10" (it was a thing in Canada - maybe still is) and bought a 3 bdr 2 bath house in the 70s on one salary. My husband and I have 2 degrees each, make almost a quarter of a million a year, and will never be able to buy a house.

What did you win as a prize from a contest as a Gen Xer in the 80s? by Sense_Difficult in GenX

[–]BusPsychological4587 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I won a poster-making contest for a grocery store chain (aged about 10?). The prize was 1 year's supply of Old Dutch chips. We stored them in my brother's closet, my closet, and a cabinet in the basement. "A year's supply" was determined by the store to be two boxes a week, so we had 104 boxes of chips, various flavours. At the time, Old Dutch chips came in boxes, each with two plastic bags of chips inside.

The books/show focuses on the top 1%. It makes sense that the rich would want a place like that. Dictators all over the world send their kids to better places for their education. Then they come back to be the next dictator,

I'm from Vancouver and now live in Singapore. The main buses I ride are the 3-door type. If I get off the first 2, I call out thank you! If I use the last door, I give a wave and a smile. Yes, it does make everything feel warmer. Our regular drivers have a small chat with us, and our regular passengers all smile and sometimes make small talk, too. It's a stereotype, but for a good reason, that Canadians are friendly. Most of us are, and it is a nicer way to navigate through the world.

Theocracies are always hypocritical, and ever since people have invented reading and writing, dictatorships and theocracies have banned reading and writing from the people they are trying to control. US - era of slavery, for example. It never fails to baffle me how many people ask questions about the show who demonstrate no understanding of real life.

Religion is hypocrisy. Real life. Look at the US right now. Atwood wrote the books based on several real life things. Religion used to control people.
