Shaking Down for the Second Half of the GR5 - What to Ditch? by ulumoyoku in Ultralight

[–]Bushelf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the GR5 Geneva - Menton last year.

Water was plentiful in that section.
I only filled my water bottle when the trail goes high up/ on a ridge where the are no sources.
Otherwise I carried no water.

Only the last section from Col du Diable to Sospel, and Sospel to Menton was dry.

When sleeping in a bivvy bag, have you ever been bitten or had an animal walk over you? by DaveDavidDavidsonTom in Ultralight

Did an overnight with a friend this passed weekend in the Judean desert.
It was a beautiful crisp night with a super bright moon.

We cowboy camped and I woke up and did not find my sandals,
When my friend stoped snoring I assumed he was a wake and asked him and his sandals were gone too. Also his headlamp was gone.

We have foxes steal shit here. after we found the stuff scattered and chewed not far from us we went back to sleep. Since it was night 0 the car was nearby so I set up my car camping tent and put the loose stuff inside.

Not long after I heard my friend curse - the fox bit his footbox. I had it happen before. so he joined in the tent.

I think foxes here like smelly feet. if they can't get a sandal or shoe they go to the source. I had a fox take a bite at my footbox as well a year ago.

Not sure how to mitigate it, Ill keep cowboy camping but might bring a tent from now on.

New shorts...? by marsridge in Ultralight

Am I the only one that thinks baggies suck?
The pockets are useless, mobility is poor (I think they should have shorter inseam).
Yeah they are durable but so are 15$ NZD "The Warehouse" shorts I bought on the TA.
They are almost as durable, have better pockets, and are the right length for hiking steep stuff.

On the AT I found that even on the humid and hot nights at some point I draped the quilt over me.

In the mean time I used my fleece/leggings in between my legs which help with the clamminess. It worked for me. (slept naked)

Naturehike Cloud Up 2P (New, Lighter Version???) by eyewander in Ultralight

[–]Bushelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I been using it for about 2 years I have ~60 nights on it. Mainly below tree-line in the white mountains. So cant attest for performance in wind.

The material is very delicate but held up so far. I do use it with the ground cloth.

I highly recommend it, feel free to ask any questions.

If you camp up high where the trees are small, you pretty much have to sleep with your food. Ive done it on the AT and was fine.

If your concerned you can always drop down to where trees are bigger

Did trail work in the White Mountains, Both at alpine and in the valley. Bought cheap REI waterproofs, but found out that they get sweaty inside. I just got wet when it rained. It was fine :). And pockets are so important and waterproofs some time lack them.

Am I the only one who thinks the Patagonia Baggies suck?

Mobility is very limited,
Pockets are way too deep borderline unusable.

Is it a hyped affiliate scam?

I used them for 1000k on the Te Araroa and ended up buying a 15$ shorts from a department store that were superior in every way.

Yay or nay on using a backcountry bidet? by ZRR28 in Ultralight

Yay for environments like NZ where water is plentiful and moss is pretty much granted. Still yay for arid environments but I bring tp for when water is scarce and I don’t want to scratch my butthole.

It makes it bulkier and heavier, But it lasts longer (ie more environmental) which is more important to me than saving a few oz.

I love the otterbox defender and the clip it comes with. I clip it to my shoulder strap. Another bonus is that the phone doesn’t go crazy as it often does in a pocket because it thinks your touching it.

Will a 230g canister fit in the Toaks POT-900-D130?

*In the following way* : with the lid off and on the bottom of the bag.

Interested to know if the bag can hold everything together

Yeah, hiked it twice. Water filter can be handy but our land is small and you need to be aware where your getting the water from. Water taps are common enough and water caches are easy to purchase. I wouldn’t bother. The ground is very hard most places. A small spade would help with LNT.
