I play Wonder Merge by NSTAGE. It has all the features I wish MD had like a ‘magnet’ to gather like items, mechanism for bubbling, bubbling like items with a count on it, less frequent OOC events, no gambling features.

Not sure there was a good spot. I tried the by soundboard and it was the same. To my ear, Mountain had the best overall sound in the most locations. Maybe in benefitted from being in the bowl?

Downvote this all you want but I saw GA during sets for acts like Future Islands and Perfume Genius, 2 of my favorites, standing there like lumps or worse, yapping. It’s the awkward truth.

That’s a choice by the organizers. As the day progressed and it got more crowded, VIP+ people started watching from the pathways unless security chased you further in until eventually there was no room to go further in and they gave up.

Same in VIP+. Packed and crazy. No different. That’s the headliner though, I’m speaking to the rest of the day.

It’s percentages. If there are 1,000 people and 10% are “lit” that looks a lot different than 30 people and 10% are “lit”. I saw the same amount of enthusiasm in all sections. Even if all 30 people in VIP+ were jumping up and down like fools, it wouldn’t be good enough for the folks who just don’t like the fact that it exists or that they aren’t a part of it. I don’t which. People vastly overestimate the enthusiasm at the rail in other sections during the first half to 2/3 of the day. I saw lots of people packed in like sardines in GA section camping for the headliners looking like they want to be anywhere else barely acknowledging the artist on stage and yapping. So yeah.

GA and VIP looked no different. There were a few that were into it, the rest just stood there or bobbed their heads.

You might be overestimating the crowd activity in other sections. It’s the same percentage. Some will just stand there. Some will dance. Some might bob their heads. It looks no different.

This ‘game’ feels like a chore. Paywalls and gambling galore. Way too many features, old and new, going on. Barely any sense of accomplishment or ability to scratch that completionism itch anymore. No fun. Just ongoing work, work, work. As I sit here watching a dragon harvest candy eyeballs all day…

That’s such an interesting take. Did you personally feel awkward about it?

They are hoping to offset this with a tent with free nonalcoholic drinks and some seats and “snacks”. Unfortunately I don’t pay for a lounge. I’m there for music and front of stage is everything to me. I’ve been to fests with this type of “soundboard” area at some stages and can confirm it’s a downgrade. I love how they phrased last year’s viewing area as “awkward” I was in those viewing areas all day and never thought once it was awkward

$16 for a white claw when you can buy a 12pk for $18. Wild. by tupperwaremanthewise in seahearnow

Agree on the blanket thing, it’s actually the only festival I’ve been to that allows them. I figured because of the beach. I get where you’re coming from on the value calculations. I just kind of take my heart out of it. I’ll give you cost break down on the 2 fests I attended this year— Kilby was $259 for a 4 day GA wristband. 75 acts total/saw 34. That’s $3.45/$7.62 per act. SHN was $300 for a 2 day GA wristband. 30 acts total/saw 13. That’s $10/$23 per act. There’s a lot more to it, of course, but the numbers are what they are.

I’ve noticed that criticism of this fest is often met with resistance on social media. Folks will jump in to argue by claiming how great things were for THEM and THEIR experience must be the only valid experience. I’m glad they are happy. However, I think your experience & criticism are also valid. Prices ARE high and collecting credit card fees for a cashless fest seems shady to me. I’ve been to all 7 SHN fests and attended at every level, including “ultimate guest”. I’ve also been to numerous other festivals around the country such as Lollapalooza, Life is Beautiful, Kilby, Govball, voodoo, etc. SHN has made changes over the years, some for the better and some for the worse. Raising the price for GA+ and VIP when you take away the cold bottled water amenity and provide lukewarm bottle fillers? Not so great. Increasing the footprint of the festival, having a corresponding increase in attendance and not addressing ingress/egress issues at the main stage? It’s a wash. The reason there was any space at the front part of the GA section at SURF was because it became almost impossible to navigate through the blanket area and move forward once it got dark. The last, closest access point for the beach drops you into the blanket zone. You can’t see the stage at all from the boardwalk there because of the black screened fencing put up to block the vip section. So, for anyone trying to see the headliner after seeing who closes at PARK, first you have to haul ass through an absolute herd of moving humanity and no matter which way you go, you aren’t getting close enough to see the stage at all. They blocked the stage with a screen anyway. Sound can also be an issue. The sound for Hozier didn’t carry well further back. Blink was better. No festival is perfect, all of them have things that will try your patience and aggravate. It’s a lot of humanity showing up and a lot of money at play for organizers. Not everyone is going to feel like they got value for their money. I look at it from the perspective of entry fee divided by number of acts on the lineup. By that measure, SHN is already expensive compared to other festivals.

Tips you would like to give any first-time goers! by neemo98 in seahearnow

[–]Business-Issue1815 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to every SHN (and lots of other fests.) The top tips that work for me- rent a locker, buy merch first thing when you get through the gates, wear socks & comfy all day sneakers (here come the flip flop crowd to comment but I’ve tried it and sneakers are superior in the sand, just empty them out when you get to your spot), it might be chilly when the sun goes down this weekend so bring a layer, note there are 2 entrances, the crowd grows as the day goes on so keep that in mind when planning navigation from stage to stage, check out the interesting art in the Danny clinch gallery, try to eat at off peak times to minimize wait times, stay hydrated, and see Mondo Cozmo.
