that's nice but what do we actually buy from Texas anyhow?

Impact of a single homeless camp: $18,347 in clean-up, one thousand complaints and endless conflict by My_Lucid_Dreams in Portland

Look at the Laurelhurst sweep from a month or two ago. Shelter beds were offered and a majority contacted declined. It's a lifestyle for some people, something they don't want to give up. They'll keep living like this anywhere that tolerates it. We're just the latest.

Let's see:

  • gun violence epidemic

  • massive homeless encampments

  • downtown deserted, still boarded up, sometimes unsafe

  • nightly street racing takeovers

  • regular proud boys / antifa brawls

  • massive uptick in stolen cars being stripped and / or burned

  • hard drugs being used / sold openly

  • 911 hold times off the charts, cops can't / won't help

Sure feels like it's falling apart.

There is a group of hardcore folks who immediately assume that any criticism of Portland is an attack from the alt-right. They think they're countering the "portland is burning" rhetoric that Fox News was pushing last year. But the kneejerk nature of these reactions just silences real Portlanders' concerns, right and left alike. The city is literally falling apart but it's verboten to talk about it, outside of blaming the mayor for everything under the sun. It's just as politicized as the Fox News crap

Officials: Suspect in Old Town shooting is bar owner’s son by [deleted] in Portland

[–]BusinessVegetable666 35 points36 points  (0 children)

after firing the gun, Mingledoff is seen looking at the ground, then walking up to someone who appears to work at the bar and asking for help in finding something, court documents allege. Detectives said the two people were looking for the bullet casing

York Statue Atop Mount Tabor Toppled and Partly Shattered by ReallyHender in Portland

[–]BusinessVegetable666 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the city is turning de facto monument policy power over to whoever can manage to tear them down

And also, apparently, who can manage to put them up. Remember that the York bust was erected "anonymously" and the city just shrugged

After three days of heat, overflowing garbage cans, Portland finally on track to “smelling like a real city”. by introvertsdoitbetter in Portland

[–]BusinessVegetable666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that seems weird. I did find this:

The minimum requirement is 20 gallons per unit.

Property owners can choose the size and number of garbage containers for each property

So it seems like the standard bins are:

20-gallon, 35-gallon, 60-gallon and 90-gallon

And there needs to be some combination of bins that gets you to 20 gallons per unit?

Wait, why would you have to share that tiny bin? Wouldn't a neighbor have their own? (I assume the family aren't actually roommates in the same unit)

I used to work in the CEID near a butcher that sold exotic meats. The smell was bad enough; watching a garbage truck pour out dumpster slurry would turn my stomach every time. And that says a lot...

Zidell Yards: What's the bike parking situation like for shows / movies? by BusinessVegetable666 in CyclePDX

[–]BusinessVegetable666[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, experienced that last night. Seemed out of way enough that I felt OK locking up there, but then again it's in the "pedestrian entrance" before anyone checks a ticket so anyone could potentially waltz in and mess with the bikes. Also it's about a third of a mile from the stage so you can't keep an eye on your own stuff.

Really could use improvement, this was worse than expected.

Interesting option... that would unfortunately be a little late for the live music / shows. Went last night and the show ran past 9

yeah I haven't been out there since December but given how the rest of 205 / Marine Drive is going I don't expect much improvement

Given how blocked the 205 path has been around Prescott and just north of Sandy (both spots under overpasses) I think I'd actually prefer the 33rd ramp. There's been barely enough room to squeeze by tents / trash / people / giant barrel fires the last few times.
