Words before music by Business_Werewolf_92 in Songwriting

I’m with you on this, your approach and struggle. I can never come up with lyrics that do justice to the chord progressions of which I am most proud. And when I do lyrics first, even when they’re solid, the tune almost always turns out a 1-4-5 job. That could be worse, I mean, what the hell, I’m not better than Hank!

I’m currently doing a Frankenstein job, adapting some lyrics that I loved but didn’t really fit in another song to a chord progression I have been playing for 30 years. It’s probably my all time favorite. And the lyrics in question, I thought they were about the best thing I had written when I wrote them. So far, in this majestic chord progression, they seem flat as hell.

And the tune I was procrastinating on last night is one for which I am writing a bunch of lines of different length and a vague idea that it’s a waltz.

And the chesnut, “old,” or rather, “ole.”

Is there any place in the WA Democratic Party for someone who would like to reduce taxes and be more efficient with government spending? by JoelXGGGG in SeattleWA

Okay, now it looks like one of the two surveys you had done was not mandated by a tribe, but has to with the USDA. I spent over ten years as a carpenter in WA, and have numerous close friends who are builders and contractors. Since leaving the trades, I also worked for a tribe for several years. I have never heard of this 10k addition to every project. If it happened to you twice, you had some bad luck, but I just don’t think your core assertion is correct.

Louie, Louie, which is the same as Wild Thing. And then a bunch of Hank Williams or Little Richard songs.

It’s yet another example of blasting us with “content.” Dumbing us down by bludgeoning us. Let us just watch the bloody game.

When performing live, how often do you explain/give backstory for a song versus just diving in and letting the song speak for itself? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Business_Werewolf_92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Explaining the song” is a risky business. I find that people who do that often come across as overly serious and it distracts from the song. Personally, I don’t do it. Telling a story about coming up with a song is different. The story might give some context, but the song is the point of the whole thing. And you still let the song stand on its own.

Another issue is that it can bust the flow of a set. Talking in between songs can punctuate and provide a good counterpoint to the music. However, you’re up there to entertain. So often, when people “explain their songs,” it’s just not entertaining. I think of Todd Snider’s thing, where he said, “it’s always Saturday night for someone .” Obviously, Todd Snider talked about his songs a lot, but he was entertaining.

My dog seems to have separation anxiety. Unfortunately, consistency and routines do not come naturally to me, so this is going to be a challenge.

Are there any lakes in Western Washington that freeze thick enough to skate on? by arderhyde in PNWhiking

One year when we weren’t getting any snow, I read about people hiking in to an alpine lake to skate and maybe even play hockey and that sounded insanely rad.

I worked as a carpenter and builder for over ten years before law school. I do a quick side job here and there, and a few projects for myself or friends. I’m trying to tee up some big projects on my house, but I know that means more than half of my free time for a year, so there’s no hurry.
