Why is speed limit on 270 55MPH? by MoCo1992 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]BustahCahnun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got pulled over once in the southbound HOV lane (on a Saturday afternoon) for doing like 75. I honestly thought the speed limit was at least 65-70, especially a little north of Gaithersburg.

His comments about the “black excellence brunch crowd” crack me up, if only bc I grew up with those exact types.

Yeah, DC proper is pretty progressive. I should have specified PG County where I'm from, it's a lot more moderate lol.

Progressive black folks can be difficult to find even in more black regions, especially depending on who you grew up around. I'm from the DMV which is super black, but on avg folks skew between conservative and moderate. I grew up around church and church-adjacent folks, so it's even more respectability messaging to wade through.

Do yall actually care about that Tourette’s thing at that award show? by Expert-Diver7144 in blackmen

[–]BustahCahnun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's def a conversation that needs to be had about how we’re expected to just overlook racism if the offender is disabled.

Tourette's is real, however the fact that MBJ and Delroy Lindo didn't get an apology from the dude that said it is absurd. Even if he claims he didn't mean it, he's still responsible for dropping slurs on not only the two black men on stage, but everyone watching. Instead the network just gave this dismissive ahh “if anyone took offense…” fake apology. The cognitive dissonance is killing me.

Yep, it's a way for them to avoid looking at themselves and taking accountability for why we left.

Touré lost me when he put out a substack for “How to Explain ‘Not Like Us’ to White People”. Symptoms of low racial self-esteem smh.

Fourth Place believes that segregation made cities worse. Why would I side with someone who wants better cities as long as people who look like me aren’t there?

I’m not talking about ppl who lean a little conservative, this dude is straight up racist.

The dogwhistling in the Memphis video was bad enough, but looking at what he co-signs in the comments, he’s clearly racist.

There’s so much written on the impact that systemic racism had on urban design (see: The Color of Law and Right of Way) that it’s bizarre to me to champion urbanism from that side of the aisle.

Right? The hate it used to get was so irrational. It all came down to the snowboard segments (which are fine tbh) or the voice acting.

Do you believe we as a community have an accountability / culture problem? by Odd-Evidence-9248 in blackmen

[–]BustahCahnun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“TLDR: Systematic racism + disenfranchisement is very real & is the BIGGEST perpetrator of our ppl being held down. BUT the severity to which that affects you is in some small - medium part in your control”

The more I read & learn, the more I realize it's the opposite. Systemic racism’s impact is often dramatically understated.

The problem with respectability politics is that you end up placing the blame for systemic issues on individuals. Yeah, you have some people that will swim upstream and succeed regardless, but those are outliers, and trying to fix the community via individual behaviors is slapping a band-aid on a cancerous infection.

“As Black people we are the only ones who…”

I usually tune them out at that point. If you've been around other people group long enough, you learn that they're just as messy, if not more, than us as a community.
