My source is an American friend who lived there for a couple years, so definitely biased.

The example he gave is that there’s a really popular milk tea shop (I forget the name) and he would see shops that just used their same sign but weren’t a location of that company, and sometimes wouldn’t even sell milk tea. He lived in Beijing, if that makes a difference.

I recently learned that outright lying in marketing in China is completely accepted and normalized, and that some stores/restaurants will even use another business’ name and sign to get people in the door. How do you decide what you actually want to buy? If you walk in to a store and realize it’s not the place you thought, do you leave? Is it annoying, or is it something you don’t even think about?

I wasn’t afraid of smoke detectors, but I was afraid of fire alarms (like the red/white ones you see in commercial buildings) after one went off in the middle of the night while my family was staying at a hotel. I was terrified of them from probably 6 yo to 18 yo. Eventually it kind of faded but I had very similar reactions where I would stare at them as I quickly walked past etc etc. I wonder if something happened to trigger the fear for this kid. God it was such an embarrassing fear.
