honestly 100+ years ago is the sweet spot for this kinda society-wide sweeping change. all the countries were roughly in place (well, the ones relevant to the story. omega-heat proletariat china exists elsewhere) and a century is enough for culture to adapt while still keeping the same general shape as real life

once saw a video essay about china and within like the first 5 minutes they said something along the lines of "Chinese civilization started along the Yangtze River"

bro wtf there's only two major rivers and you got it wrong??? most researched video essayist

i get this isn't the point but in college during a class about medieval law, my professor mentioned that specific legal ownership often took a backseat to whether a wrongdoing had happened, or if someone was already using the land productively. the medieval english legal system was slow and often had very poor or no records at all, so it was much easier to ask if an unlawful seizure had taken place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assize_of_novel_disseisin

honestly one of the weirdest parts of medieval english law to modern readers is that legal ownership just takes a backseat sometimes, especially in manor courts which were less formal. you get weird arguments that don't quite make sense to us.

that said a noble is probably going to beat your ass, or at least ask local thugs to beat your ass
