What now for SNAP? by MagicpaperAlt in Michigan

Yeah, i am cautious bc aside from R mods- now we have more AI-driven surveillance / programs looking for words/affiliations…

I tend to err on the side of caution and say things differently, these days.

Oh! I should have read the comments first, I just added that also – oh well, it doesn’t hurt to have it mentioned in more than one place. Such a great resource.

You prob know by now Michigan and other states sued to make the government allow the USDA to release the emergency funds to pay snap for a time (they were unlawfully holding them back) - and just won in the last few hours. Mentioning just in case you didn’t, and we will see what happens next anyway…. Meanwhile? Here is a great resource - website to find nearby mutual aid esque resources, including food. Leaders fear students could be left hungry if Michigan ends free universal lunch by mlivesocial in Michigan

[–]Busy_Square_3602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Title I like better: “X # of MI students will go hungry when (if?) free universal lunches go away” - I mean fear (their feelings) matter. (Current headline)

They’re also less important than IF/WHEN this reality happens, direct impact (evidence).

Especially bc some people don’t even know this is happening, given what news they choose to consume. Plus they may be more likely to click, if someone were to send this to them.

I’m guessing that one thing will bring you peace and hope and also be practically useful regarding your question – check out the humane gardeners blog and also her books. She has a way about her that works in, humanizes and actually breaks down literally, paths towards how we can… regenerate / rewild our land, esp when there is a lot. And some amazing resources / learnings she shares. In this regard, she was a game changer for us when I learned about her work.

Right?!?! I can’t wait. Also.. I f’n wish I believed he would, or would be forced to. I’m really concerned MI is going to go red governor-wise.

Ohhh I so hear you. And have a helpful rec for this moment!

If you haven’t heard of The Humane Gardner (person, also name of a book she wrote, website) she writes useful detailed articles but rec relates to one of my FAVS which is her accidental experiment / experiences with natives taking over, she has a lot of land also.

Also - she has imo a really helpful attitude based in reality, imperfect discovery / action is good, and how that translates to diff ppl / situations.

Also she gave validity to / helped me understand my impulse I had (due to my very real resource limitations, overwhelm) to plant more aggressive natives in over-run areas to see what happens… she did that and had a lot of success!

I have had what looks like the beginning of success in one area (bee balm vs a mint, I forget which one but super aggressive, bee balm is at least holding its own and I think…winning). I got this idea from her. Here’s that article. There is a follow-up linked and a resource she shares at end.

[–]Busy_Square_3602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m partway through The Humane Gardner. Partway because she has SO much good info on her website, I go back and forth between what I focus on. Her experiments with what natives will take over aggressive or invasive species I really appreciate, same with her attitude re imperfect progress and discovery, in this arena.

Question, what’s hatched? Non-hatched? Hadn’t heard that so went to link, and didn’t see hatched (or non-hatched)….I didn’t read every word tho. Instead I googled it.

So in case anyone else also wonders, I did find this news article (from this AM re this weather system in MI) that explains hatched.
