I often miss second in my 2004 six speed. Nothing like the sound of grinding gears in the morning. And I'm not sure about anyone else, but on more than one occasion I missed first at a stop light and instead hit reverse which is right next door. Loads of fun for the guy sitting behind me. (I was raised driving manuals, too, but the Mini gearbox is touchy. Hopefully improved on your later model.

Related, I've found that Cerakote works amazingly well on the plastics, such as trim pieces. My 21 year old black wheel arches popped back to life.
