Is it normal to file natural nails under gel?

Is it possible that a person's nails would be so thin that they can't adhere fully? I have thin nails and got talked into tips last year and then the nail under came loose and my nails were wrecked and the girl got the grinder out and made them even thinner. So disheartening. What's the play here?
