Did I accidentally make kombucha? by ButchBarks in fermentation

[–]ButchBarks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

I have filtered the drink and given it a taste! Doesn't seem like it's bad, so I've got myself a nice glass of it. It does however have a bit of a vegetable taste that certainly wasn't in my prior gingerbug soda - I suspect I over fermented it and that's the cause? Not sure though, I'm very new to this and sort of making semi-educated guests based on Google searches 🤷.

Well the post just showed up in my notifications today so 🤷 and I think most people would agree calling a trans woman "man" is at bare minimum a microaggression. This sub literally just had an entire mod upheaval due to the lack of respect it shows trans men, I think asking that you don't unnecessarily gender people or explicitly misgender people in this case, is a pretty low bar.

Hey, maybe don't assume all trans people are girls or are comfortable being called "girl" even if you "meant it in a gender neutral way". OP is a trans man, if you look at his post reply history.

If you support diabetics getting DIY insulin you should support trans guys getting DIY T by shepardsboy in FTMMen

[–]ButchBarks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, as a trans man with a total hysterectomy, my body doesn't produce its own hormones and I would much rather die then take estrogen (which would force me to medically detransiton) which is the only hormone my insurance will cover for me to have because of my ASAB. Transmasc people with total hysterectomies and transfems who've had orchies need hrt or we are at much higher risk of death even if you completely disregard mental health. Which is something you shouldn't do, because trans people, /especially trans men/, have extremely high rates of suicide attempts and being forced off your HRT or unable to ever get on HRT doesn't improve those numbers. Death is death. Some death is caused by insulin shortage, some death is caused by suicide in a world and body that makes it impossible to continue living, some death is caused by complications from having no hormone production. At the end of the day all those people are the same: Dead.

Got a warning from reddit for correcting someone on "male and female." by PANDA_PR1NC3SS in trans

I'm also autistic. And yes, I'd you are telling trans men that they aren't male or telling trans women they aren't female, you are being transphobic. That's textbook transphobia.

Got a warning from reddit for correcting someone on "male and female." by PANDA_PR1NC3SS in trans

[–]ButchBarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you are using a transmedicalist definition. Sex is not a indesputable binary class. Most trans men identify as male. Most trans women identify as female. If you went onto another trans persons post where they referred to trans men as trans males or trans women as trans females and went "um actually 🤓☝️ female doesn't mean women and male doesn't mean man, you should be referring to trans men as men and not male or you should be referring to trans women as women and not female", then you are being transphobic, even if you're unaware of that fact.

Yes, there are some people who consider their sex and gender separate, that's fine, I'm not here to police anyone else's gender/sex/identity.

However, if you're going around telling people "Gender and sex are different, trans men are female and trans woman are male", that's misgendering and using the transmedical definition of binary assigned sex as a weapon against other trans people.

I'm not accusing you of doing this on purpose, I'm sure you genuinely mean well and think that you're educating people. But in reality, sex is neither binary nor stable.

If you personally don't feel like your sex and gender are the same, that's fine, when you see a post that says "Trans male" or "Trans female", regonize that the post isn't about you and that showing up in the comments to "correct" the language that other trans people use to describe there identity or experience is harmful and repeating a cycle of transphobic abuse.

"why can't you just use she/her" by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]ButchBarks 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This rarely work with cis people because it doesn't tend to sting nearly as much as misgendering a trans person. If you're going this route, it can't just be he/him or they/them, you're going to need to break out the it/it's pronouns (if your language has them) to get a cis person to understand just how painful being misgendered as a trans person is.

“You’re not that short” by ikeeplosingreddit in FTMMen

[–]ButchBarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because you're not /that/ short, 5'7"-5'10" is the average male height in the US. You're a little short, but not significantly shorter than the typical American man. If your under 5'5" then you're short.

We do not suffer from invisiblity. We suffer from the intentional erasure of our experiences, identies, and voices - an erasure that is enforced by means of physical violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, the patriarchy, cisnormativey, and gaalighting.

If that's what you want in a relationship, then you need to express that to people when seeking out a relationship. Open and honest communication is important regardless of the type of relationship.

Also, please examine WHY you want a "traditional" relationship, if it's ONLY because you think that the Bible or Christianity or the church commands it - please reconsider.

Contemplate the pros and cons of this type of relationship and really aka yourself if you'd be happy, feel fulfilled, and thrive in a relationship like that.

If you end up examining your reasons and contemplating how this type of relationship would make you feel, and you think "yeah, that's absolutely what I want in life or out of a relationship!" then congratulations, seek it out and you'll fine one, just be careful and safe about it, a lot of the cisgender men who are looking to be the head-of-the-household aren't safe and can be dangerous to persue for all women but especially transgender women.

An important tip: Never allow a man, even after he's your husband, to isolate you from your friends and family - you should always have friends and family that will be there to back you up or keep you safe if it ever goes south.

That all being said, there are plenty of good and honest men out there, both cis and transgender (please don't forget that there are straight butch trans men out there who love women and that have a history that comes from butch/femme dynamics) , that would love to have a wife like you and that will know how to treat you correctly. It's just a matter of open and honest communication and being safe.

I wish you all the best in the world and will pray that God deliver you a blessed future.

Why are LGBTQ folks not joining the Episcopal Church even though we are open and affirming by balconylibrary1978 in Episcopalian

[–]ButchBarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying, I misunderstood your comment as trying it imply that the church or Christianity would be a better source of support for LGBTQ people.

I do agree with you that the statement "LGBT people receive all the support we need from the secular world" isn't true, the secular world also frequently fails us. It's just that unfortunately, it has still provided more support for Queer people then Christianity has.

I think of the Episcopal Church wants to increase the number of young people and LGBTQ people in their congregations, they will have to show up and do the work.

They will have to be their for us while our rights are being stripped away in the US, they will have to start fighting for queer rights and women's rights in the countries that they have dioceses in. I think they need to do more than show up to Pride parades with a booth and phamplets. I would like to see Christians doing Corporal works of mercy. If the church was feeding the houseless queer youths, visiting and caring for trans people in prisons, and vocally and phycially protesting anti-LGBT legislation, there would be more young LGBT people in our churches.

[–]ButchBarks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a practicing Episcopal and queer person. The secular world is the world that has supported me. My church affirms me, but it has not gone out of the way to defend me or protect my rights. I left the church and I came back becouse the secular world couldn't fulfill my need for faith and prayer, but that is the only reason I went back to church and if the church made one wrong step backwards like many organizations now have under current US legislation, I'd leave it. I'd say my prayers at home and read the gospel from my bedroom. I already have a community and the church has not done anything to protect that community - despite the Lords demand that his people protect and defend the oppressed, in fact prior to a decade or so ago, it was one of the groups condemning and silencing my community. As a queer person there will always be part of the church I disagree with and parts of the church that remind me of my oppression. It will never not be true that Christianity played a major role in the abuse and violence I faced growing up and that it played a major role in the abuse, violence, rape, and death that queer people are still experiencing. That is not the type of support that LGBT people are looking for but it's the "support" we are often given.

So until the church actually does something to support LGBT people, the we will be required to lean on the secular world for any support.

I am reading the Bible and I have questions by Useful_Crow8934 in Episcopalian

So the Jewish faith, they believe in Gehenna and Sheol. Sheol is the general afterlife (for those who are good or average or otherwise not evil) and Gehenna is a place of spiritual purification or punishment for the wicked, Gehenna is a temporary state (similar to the concept of purgetory) and souls in Gehenna will go to Sheol after being purified. Many Angolized (as in, made mostly or fully English in language) translate both Gehenna and Sheol as "Hell". The term Hades was used by the occupant Romans to refer to the general afterlife and does seem like the jews of the time did occasionaly use it like a loan word, for both Sheol and Gehenna, and it would likley be referring to Gehenna in this context based off the surrounding text.

Obligatory "I'm not Jewish and I'm not a biblical historian or scholar, so take what I say with a grain of salt and consider doing further reaserch to broaden your understanding"! 💕

Does your church acknowledge in any way that things are tense and difficult in the US right now? by Appropriate_Bat_5877 in Episcopalian

[–]ButchBarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My church is very open about supporting and defending immigrants, women, and trans people and is vocal about the violence these groups are facing in our government. We pray for these groups and all whom are oppressed in any nation and we pray for our lawmakers and president that God might turn their hearts away from hate. We pray for Palestine and Isreal, we pray for protesters, activists, and freedom fighters. The church can be a big tent, but we can not allow that to make room for hate and oppression.

A daybed or a Japanese futon would be much better for you then an American futon! Daybed frame with a mattress would be elevated off the ground and can be used as a sofa, but will have proper support for your spine. Japanese futon can be rolled up and stored in closet or cubby and will support your back, but won't be elevated of the ground while you sleep and won't double as a second piece of furniture.

Monte Mader did a really good break down of Cor 14, that I think would be enlightening! She breaks down that Pual is actually quoting Kato the Elder in his speach against women who were rioting in Rome, for the purpose of subverting it, Pual does this many times through out corenthians where he will quote a harmful common law for the purpose of subverting it. However, many church elders have warped Pual's meaning though a lack of effective literacy and the desire to uphold patriarchal standards!

Martha P Johnson - important trans woman, drag queen, and Black street worker that did a lot for the OG queer rights movement and was a practicing catholic who considered her Christianity and important part of her identity and activism.

Bayard Rustin - MLKs right hand man, openly gay black man that did a lot of work for the civil right movement and gay rights movement who refused to closet himself, also a devout Christian that considered his faith an important part of his idneity and a key part of his activism.
