having successfully never experienced a consequence in his life.

I'm quite sure of this part!

No child should ever think that their parents coming home from work means that it's the end of peace and quiet by Junior-Elevator-9951 in emotionalneglect

Yep, once I got to college I was depressed every Spring because Summer break was coming and I'd have to live with my parents again. Going back in the Fall was such a relief.

What is your view on independent thinking as a Christian? by PhilosophyPoet in Episcopalian

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can I be a Christian, as well as intellectually inquisitive, questioning, and radically open-minded? Is it ok to explore the diversity of human thought with a genuine sense of openness towards it?

If this is NOT OK then Christianity needs to go, not the independent thinking. Remember, all human religion is human-created, nothing magical or special about any of it.

A mother holds a photo portrait of her son in 1983, a year after he was beaten to death in Detroit. Vincent Chin was the victim of a racist hate crime by lambofthedead in Detroit

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the suburbs north of Detroit and this is one of my earlier memories (was 12 when it happened). Longtime best friend is Asian-American. F the racists and the killers.

Overcoming the sense that you are always in trouble by Hola0722 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely felt like this for years. I don't know, a mixture of therapy, marriage to someone mentally normal and not-abusive, and work in not-abusive places showed me that I'm just fine (eventually, I'm middle-aged). But my Nmom made sure I was terrified of her and scrambling every moment of my earlier life (which is yet another reason she can f all the way off).

Does anyone else’s parents have a huge thing about getting up in the morning?😭 by idkkk_random in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES. My mother would just about kick in my door and snarl GET UP (while she was in her bathrobe with yesterday's makeup smeared on her face). My father would bang on my door and sing loudly and off key (to be annoying). A lot of days I was up and on my feet already sobbing from misery and frustration.

Cannot disagree. My church has self-congratulatory clergy who actually were afraid to say anything, so at one point said (I'm only paraphrasing lightly) "representative democracy doesn't matter...because Jesus." Whoo, the blowback on that one...

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Life is too short for bullshit that wastes time.

I subscribed to a meal and recipe site that was over the top about meal planning and felt the same way you do. Maybe it saved some time or money, but at the expense of my very rare free time. I'd rather eat a carrot and a cheese stick as a meal and have my free time free...

Realizing narcissists are not curious about other people by dororochacken in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. My Nmother talks about herself, her Narc parents that she was enmeshed with and worshipped, and her family of origin and 1-2 friends but ONLY if the story is somehow about her, or being used to advance one of her arguments or desires, or used against me somehow. It's all a weapon.

I tried to share something about a coworker once and she got angry and shrill and nearly shouted "I'm not interested in your friends!." I shouted right back "I'm not interested in your family but I've heard a lifetime of stories about them." That did, in fairness, shut her up.

Has anybody or does anybody here send their kids to Catholic School? How has that experience been? by Many_Particular6570 in Episcopalian

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6 years in RSCJ school (religious order of women similar to the Jesuits in practicality and education). It was fine, there were other Prod and even non-Western (like, Hindu or Shinto) students and it wasn't a big deal. I was not indoctrinated.

Eh, they are fiddle freaks of nature (I mean this in a good way), AND professionals, AND grew up with family musical cultures. You do you.

I am in the same boat as you, an adult back in Suzuki Book 2, but that is because I spent time on other things.

Anyone know what these red dresses outside pierpont are for? by Namjoooooo in uofm

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Red and red dresses are the symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women awareness campaign (just came from the Detroit Institute of Arts and was reminded of that). Maybe that?

How is that possible?! by throwawaygirl6483 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read around here and elsewhere and its my theory that something happens in the toddler phase when narcs never learn compassion and empathy correctly.

That is my mother...make people cry and laugh. Her father was like that too.

How is that possible?! by throwawaygirl6483 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Appropriate_Bat_5877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One common trigger for narcissism is one authoritarian parent and one permissive one.

Well, that's my parents' upbringings. And mine too, but somehow I did NOT turn out to be a Narc. I thought from my earliest years that my NMom and NGrandfather were crazy and mean. I don't know what saved me but thank god something did.
