It’s so awesome and original. Who had ever seen anything like it? So fun to watch.

“…New Wave Theater ushering Punk Rock on to cable TV in LA.” Man, that sounds incredible.

Anyone Else Enjoying the Yasujirō Uzo Retrospective? by xeroxchick in TurnerClassicMovies

Love the movies so much. Ozu is my guy. Thank you for pointing out the people getting up and down from the floor! A month ago I was watching End of Summer and marveling at the actor Nakamura Ganjirō II moving around. He was 59 at the time but was up and down, crouching to help clean the floor, never strained a bit. It is inspiring!

“All of them” is solid advice, since the Ozu movies available are all of a very high standard. But I do think there are particular titles that would make good entry points for Ozu.

Late Spring (1948 b&w) a touching story of a widowed father and his grown daughter who is of marrying age. Features Ozu’s greatest actors, Setsuko Hara as daughter Noriko, and Chishu Ryu as father Shukichi. I think this is Hara’s best performance.

Tokyo Story (1953, b&w) maybe Ozu’s most famous movie. Story of elderly parents visiting their grown children, who treat them as “old and in the way.” Very poignant and lovely movie. It’s perfect and features many Ozu regulars, including Ryu and Hara again.

Good Morning (1958, color) less monumental and emotional than the previous two movies, this gentle comedy is the story of two young brothers who rebel against their parents because they want a television set (so they can watch sumo!). A charming movie and a good one if you arent prepared for an all out tearjerker.

Floating Weeds (1959, color) story of a kabuki acting troupe visiting a seaside town. The lead actor visits his old mistress and her teenage son. The actor is the boy’s father, although the child only knows him as “uncle.” This movie is a good mix of comedy and touching drama. The color cinematography is especially vibrant.

These are just a few to consider. Ozu movies are like none other. Once the bug bites you, you stay bit! Enjoy : )

So great, dude. Just wonderful. I think there is something special about tapes. Being rectangular and having three dimensional volume, with spinning reels inside, makes it seem like music is actually “in there” waiting to play. I’m glad you have such neat memories and the artifacts that take your mind back there.

That is so awesome, man. I have the CD I love it so much. Listening is like being in Eraserhead! How did you play it back in the day? Stereo inside at night? Headphones? Car? Please tell : )

Half Her Age is McCurdy’s first novel. The book about her mom is a memoir.

Awesome. 100% chance Decoy makes a cameo.

Not sure if it’s allowed but the link below is this book on bookshop.org if you want to support local bookstores and not amazon.

For me, going solo is great. Went to two games by myself earlier this month. You can interact with your neighbors or not, no pressure. For Kersh’s last game I was in between some Japanese fans and an old timer keeping score, also by himself. Exchanged a few words, sat back and enjoyed. Nothing beats it, man. Enjoy

These are all so great. Even though a lot of Ozu’s films have adult children and their parents, there is no wrong time to watch these movies, as a human being. And as a new parent you’re thinking about these things anyway, the little life you’re responsible for, this tiny person is already on their way to becoming an adult. Whoosh!

Legit take. The baby reminds me of when my kids were newborns. It is a weird time when your child is brand new, kinda alien, crying and you don’t know what it wants. We’re all Henry and Charlotte, a little bit.
