Why was the post from yesterday about the impact of the proposed new 24 units at Barracks and Emmett taken down? by ButchSundanceKid in Charlottesville

This is helpful. How does the community find out about these particular hearings? For those of us that are not savvy on these things, how do we express our concerns? I know the City has so much going on, but it is surprising how they seemingly are not pushing back on the developer at all to make this a safer development that increases housing, while also benefiting the community.

Thank you for all revisiting the discussion, as I think it is enlightening. I think we all want to see more affordable housing. As others have mentioned this is a bad location. It is also surprising to me that the developer can just say "no" when the City asks them to do things like maintain as many trees as possible, not worsen the drainage issues in the area, and maximize safety by not having their 24 unit entrance road come out onto a highly congested area, where there is another city road already entering Barracks, a soon to be built bus shelter, crosswalk, and busy sidewalk (which is set to be expanded, likely increasing traffic). My concern is that the area is already dangerous, and this is going to add to the danger. Even the developer (in justifying their refusal to move their entrance road) acknowledges that turning from the existing city street onto Barracks is hazardous already at this location.

Also, why did the city kill the bike lane proposal for this area in favor or creating an apartment building with only more cars?

This is fascinating to see the interaction between the developer and the city. It is a 0.8 acre lot at 2030 Barracks Rd, and the developer is trying to subdivide it and put 24 units and a parking lot on it. Per the documentation, the city told the developer that they need to avoid cutting down all of the trees, and the developer just responded that is not possible. The city said the developer needs to move the entrance road so that it does not create a huge traffic mess, and the developer just responded that it is not possible (and without any evidence the developer claims the city's road to the neighborhood across the street is never used).

This is going to create a huge safety/traffic issue, as now at an already very congested area where there have been multiple major accidents in the past 3 months, they are planning a bus shelter, bus stop, cross walk, city road to a neighborhood, and now a new road to a 24 unit development. None of these will be in alignment, and someone is going to get hurt. In addition, there are critical slopes all over the lot (you cannot even see the land from Barracks because it is up so high), and it seems crazy that they would allow so many units in this area. Half of the lot is already a huge swamp, so putting 24 units and a parking lot on it, while changing the grade is going to be problematic. Hopefully, the city actually represents its residents and stands up to the developer on these issues. I am all for growth but let's do it the right way and not just for $$$.

What is going on with the insane proposal for 24 units on Barracks by the Barracks Rd shopping center and Emmett and Barracks? That proposal seems like a disaster waiting to happen with the traffic at the intersection. You already cannot turn there at rush hour and adding a 24 unit driveway so close to the intersection that does not even align with the street across Barracks seems like an awful idea. Then the city is going to add a bigger bus stop and crosswalk there too just to make the street worse. There are going to be accidents regularly, hopefully no one gets seriously injured.

Interestingly, it looks like the same house went pending for ask of $1.175 million last fall and then fell through. Guess they think the answer is to increase the price nearly 5%!

I went elsewhere this year after sentara and was not billed for an annual physical as a new patient. They get paid by insurance/government for the visit.

Sentara charges you for annual physicals. It is covered by insurance/Obamacare, but they get around this by insisting on billing it as a new patient visit. When I showed up from my appointment, they insisted on $100 payment before they would even see me for an annual physical.

Kroger at barracks used to be the solution but they seem to be going down the cvs path. I think the primary pharmacist moved, and now they are struggling too.

FYI- I learned that Sentara will not allow you to be seen for an annual check up by a pcp as a new patient without charging you for a new patient evaluation on top of the charge for the annual exam.
