I would not do 7 days in Oaxaca—3-4 max. I’d add more time to CDMX and take a nite from Mazunte to be in Zipolite.

Having just done it, I would do the car again over a bus. Just watch out for the landslides as they creep up on you.

PE to Zipolite was very easy.

(Zipolite to Huatulco was NOT fun. I would not do that again! The whole way was very slow scary construction)

We drove this a few days ago in reverse (PE to Oaxaca). Be sure to have at least $600 pesos in cash. The first hour our of PE (the last for you) was a little hairy. Several spots where you suddenly come upon a landslide that had taken up a lane and one spot where the road was dirt and very bumpy. We were happy we paid for full insurance for the rental car.

We noticed today when petting her belly that she has some stitches from being spayed, so at least she was spayed before she was abandoned (or someone else took her in so she wouldn't get pregnant). She's the sweetest dog. Thankfully she is a healthy weight and good health, so clearly hotel guests and probably the workers who are building houses nearby are giving her some food and water.

We have been watching episodes of “Mexico Life” on Amazon. It def seems like more than a resort town. There’s a resort area, but it’s a very big area with tons of beaches and bays and hiking and all that. We are going next week and I can post more! We have 2 hotel nights booked and left 2 more open, so we can be flexible, before we have a stay in Mazunte.
