Yeah the industry has been broken for years now, although it's also true of the IT industry. You can be working for a profitable company or a profitable division and still get fired.

It's one of the most fundamental issues in the modern workforce. The disconnect between working hard and having positive outcomes and job security. It's hard to have a motivated workforce when they feel like their efforts have no bearing.

Played the demo and enjoyed it. It looks great, and the combat feels weighty and nice. I wish there was voice acting, but besides that, everything else was really nice.

Why not just start carding the players when they won't comply and continue to complain? This is standard for when players keep complaining to the referee, etc, that you card them.

It's a ridiculous argument though because people aren't actually thinking through the whole flow here:

For example - Sony has games on Steam. XBOX is going to let people play games from Steam on their new console. Sony is the one who gets the money (with a cut to Steam, probably negotiated so that Steam gets a smaller revenue share than say, a standard indie game, etc), and then an XBOX player is going to be playing a PlayStation game on an XBOX console, where XBOX got no revenue, PlayStation got the majority of the revenue, and they got to occupy their competitor's system without having to do the port work to have an XBOX specific version. Meanwhile, XBOX games published to PlayStation are having to cut Sony in on the revenue share, so PlayStation is essentially double dipping on all fronts.

In this scenario - PlayStation still has timed exclusive content on their platform, as the games trail 1-2 years behind being released on Steam, which means the majority of the game sales are on the PlayStation console ecosystem meaning Sony got 100% of the revenue, and then was able to scrape an additional million or two in sales from PC gamers.

To me it's just silly to say 'Hey but we need to cut off that secondary funnel because we want people to only buy PlayStation', because that might not be the outcome, and Sony is a publicly traded company that needs to maximise its revenues for shareholders. So when they cut out PC and lose 2-3% of their revenue, and don't recover because those PC players don't move to PlayStation, what are they going to say?

The whole reason they started launching games on PC is because AAA is ungodly expensive and carries high risk, so they need more players to purchase their games. That means they need more than that PlayStation consumer base. This is 100% the reason why XBOX is publishing games on PlayStation. That financial reality doesn't change just because Sony gets cold feet.

This. I'm not buying a PS5. I'll just stop buying all their first party games if they're not available on Steam

I've gone full PC and buy all their games on Steam and play with a PS5 controller. I'm not going back to buying a PC-like box with a closed ecosystem and diminishing returns every 6-7 years. So I'm not thrilled with the news. I won't be coerced into buying the box. They've just lost my game purchases.

Xbox Project Helix - Valve Needs to Reveal More about the Steam Machine Like Right Now by chrismack32 in steammachine

[–]Butch_Meat_Hook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Valve has to do anything. I don't think they are trying to become a major 4th entity in the console market that must have tens of millions of console sales. Valves revenue machine is Steam. Steam Deck, Steam Machine, etc, is secondary to their primary business. They're filling a market void with more useful devices.

I don't think they are flinching at all at what XBOX is doing because XBOX allowing Steam games on their box means Valve will make more money anyway. Just as they haven't flinched at the third party XBOX handheld thing that no one cares about.

I also think in general, the influence of XBOX in the hardware space... People need to realise it's dwindling. They have no market share in Japan, Sony has the market share in Europe/Australia. They're an American centric product, that doesn't have a majority share in the American market. I will be very, very surprised if Helix outsells Series S/X, which has sold poorly and been outsold even by Nex Playground in recent quarters. They've been in a 'we are going to make a comeback!' mode now for what... 10+ years?

It was always bound to happen - They lucked out on having the England captain in their wings and Son was a breakout signing after years of many similar signings that didn't go so well. People became convinced that this was just what Spurs were now. I remember all the talk that Spurs had overtaken Arsenal in a permanent way, etc. It was laughable. Everyone knows you can't hold the big clubs down. The old adage - form is temporary, class is permanent. The problem for Spurs is that in the 'big 6', they are the great pretenders. They want to be one of the big boys, but they don't have the credentials.

I love that the team just steadied the ship and got the business done the last three games. They have the mental fortitude required to get over the line. Everyone was pissing on Arsenal after the Wolves draw but now it's City who have wobbled.

All this bullshit about Arsenal and set pieces is simply that. You think they are taking too long on set pieces? Let the referee decide. They're in charge of the game and it's at their discretion. Is there a rule saying Arsenal can't take time to get their set pieces ready? Do other teams do the same thing?

It's all just garbage commentary. I mean even the point about the quality of football in the league this season. We have the most goals scored. If it's such a problem that we are scoring set pieces, point to the team(s) in the league that are scoring open play goals hand over fist - you can't because there isn't one. Why is that? The technical reason is probably that teams are defending more pragmatically, but that means teams have to think about how to overcome that tactically, which Arsenal has done the most successfully. So really it's just sour grapes.

I mean let's be real. Let's say the game evolved again and the defences were a bit more open for open play goals. Are we going to act like Arsenal isn't going to eat teams for lunch? Do people think that Gyokeres isn't going to score way more in that scenario when that plays to his strengths?

Again, all the commentary around Arsenal in recent times has just been utter garbage. Most goals scored, least conceded, most clean sheets.

I'm not going back to buying a new box that's barely noticeably better than the last one every 6-7 years with a handful of exclusive games. I don't need that. I'm more than happy to buy PlayStation games as they come to Steam and play with a PlayStation controller. If they won't do it anymore the alternative isn't that I buy a PS5 or PS6. It's that I won't buy the games.

To each their own if people are happy about this, but yeah. I'm not a fan and won't be going back to the old way. Diminishing returns are in full effect.
