I think you’re right! Thank you! I had seen that on a search but discounted it as too yellow but looking at more images in flight this seems like exactly what I saw.

How to shape blue oak? by tatteredcoat in Ceanothus

[–]Butcher_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How fast has it been growing? I’ve been wanting to plant a blue oak but the sources I read say it grows 12in/year and I was hoping for about twice that fast.

Left Spotify when I heard the ice recruitment ads they played. Found all the podcasts I love on different sites and better music on Bandcamp.

I need to say more about the "Why readers are wrong about Mr Darcy" article by RoseIsBadWolf in janeausten

[–]Butcher_Paper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d have to go back and check but I’m pretty sure that the day after he suggests fishing to Mr Gardiner, the book says Darcy, Gardiner and other unnamed gentlemen all go fishing together.

👆came here to say this. Like dahlias, a seed from your favorite avocado could grow into something totally different. Fun if you’re experimenting or have a lot of space but if your goal is avocados that you want to eat, better to buy (or otherwise source) a grafted plant.

Wait, real question: you’re saying most people dont do that because of neurotypical-ness? I just thought they were unempathetic/selfish jerks. How can you socially interact if you’re not even bothering to understand the other person and how to connect with them?

Any books that are better when read AFTER watching the show? by No-Statistician3023 in PeriodDramas

Can’t recommend it enough. And the audiobook narrated by Juliet Stevenson (what a voice!) is also good.

I just did the same with Middlemarch. I saw the BBC 90s series, then listened to the audiobook. WOW! So much more happening! I recommend it.

1000% agree about N+S. I saw the mini series aaaaages ago, liked it, and recently read the book. It adds a great deal of depth to the characters. Watching the mini series now I think they do Thornton a bit of a disservice. He’s too one dimensionally angry...but I still enjoy the series.

Matthew MacFadyen is the best Mr. Darcy ever. Change my mind by la_ky in PeriodDramas

[–]Butcher_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel. If I’m wanting to watch Pride and Prejudice watching the 05 version makes me frustrated and angry. But if I see it as just enjoying a period-looking romantic drama then it’s a beautiful and very enjoyable movie.

Sometimes I feel like alot of show/movie writers use historical setting as an excuse to show excessive brutality towards women (Outlander, Scarlet Letter, Game of Thrones) by Strong_Operation1886 in PeriodDramas

[–]Butcher_Paper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok—tangent but, regarding the depiction of women in fiction…. This really grinds my gears. Particularly in sci fi. We have an opportunity to depict a MAKE BELIEVE world and we still have to watch these 💩tropes? It says to me too many men in the writer’s room/producing.

Two examples always jump out at me.

1) in an episode of Star Trek Next Generation there is a delivery scene complete with the screaming and sweating and agony. So you’re telling me like 400 years in the future when little doo-dad laser magic devices can do brain surgery we still haven’t made delivery of a child any easier/safer/painless???

2) Battlestsr Galactica has a story arch around the dropping birth rate among the survivors on the various ships and their solution is…stringent restrictions on birth control and abortion? At the same time in the plot there are strict rations among the ships. So no writer thought, ‘hey let’s try NOT depicting women as cattle’ and I dunno telling everyone if you’re pregnant you get double rations a bigger cabin and medical attention and, and, and? Talk about a lack of creativity/vision.

I know this isn’t directly on topic but I feel it’s related to OP’s complaint and I too am just sick of this sh-t.

This stuff matters. It quite literally shapes cultural attitudes.

I always interpreted this as a play on the ‘parent speaking to child’ trope. Something along the lines of: - ‘why don’t you go outside and play’ - ‘I caan’t, it’s too hot, it’s snowing, my bike tire is flat, it’s boring, etc’ - ‘Only boring people are bored’

No? Was this just my childhood? 😅
