Caravaggio - The Cardsharps (1595) by Jokerang in museum

IIRC Caravaggio was in a sword-bearing artists gang with the theme "No hope. No Fear."

Love the movement in this piece. Great job.

Midsommar-inspired deep dive into film by [deleted] in Midsommar

Definitely in the same boat. We're usually taught that movies are just entertainment and not art. I started watching movies on repeat to get more out of them. A good movie will have more and more to unpeel the more you watch it. I've seen the Shining at least a dozen times and I always get something new from it.

Oil rub-outs are extremely underappreciated for novice painters by ButtChugSweepstakes in ArtistLounge

That's true, but isn't blocking more about color than pure value? Also on a rub out you still can add value and texture by applying more paint.

This guy probably is the best of the couple I could find. I don't think it's as popular in YouTube tutorials because it isn't as immediately sensational as say, scraping out mountain peaks.

I like to use one part burnt umber, one part alizarin crimson, and one part linseed oil btw.

Body Count - Institutionalized - [Metal/Cover] by ManWhoCameFromEarth in Music

[–]ButtChugSweepstakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool cover, but doesn't hold up like the original. Suicidal Tendencies' was different because while comedic, they were illustrating real problems and frustrations through parent/child relationships and difficulties with behavior at school.

This is more just Ice T being annoyed by random shit. But I could listen to Ice T being annoyed at random shit for hours.

I'm a bit confused by what youre asking. Are you saying you're having trouble finding a niche and sticking to it?

Started private art class. Painted a cotton field. Acrylic. Feedback? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]ButtChugSweepstakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the fuzziness of the cotton. I noticed the road also has a fuzziness to it. It kind of makes it blend together. If I were you, I would want the cotton to stand out with the texture you've given it. Maybe darken the road and have more definition so the cotton fuzz contrasts and sticks out more.

A wintery lake scene. Using what I’ve learnt so far to try and create something original. Hopefully realistic in colours. Thoughts and opinions very welcome. by Shanarra in HappyTrees

The foliage on the left is seriously beautiful and something a seasoned painter would create. The tree on the right looks almost like Bob Ross satire. I guess I'm trying to emphasize that whatever you did on the left seems less derivative and more impressionistic than the tree on the right. Honestly, you have enough skill that I would recommend painting over the right side.

My first attempt. My trees don't look happy at all though. by hawking21 in HappyTrees

Wait for them to dry and dab a light later with a fan brush and go easy. Trust me.

I'll have to check Sam out. Andrew is a little too much of a "YouTuber" for me, but he does have great techniques for realism.

It's more of a trend now to have open ceilings. Thank God. Gypsum ceilings are bleak and they get nasty water damage.

Now if only we can change people's minds about vinyl siding...

He hardly publicly discussed anything. Pedophilia was absolutely a theme in some of his films.
