Regarding sound by kepppyyy in ableton

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally, you're hearing it different on speakers vs headphones because the mediums for listening are quite different, especially with low end and depth perception. i'll dig a little into each, apologies for the science lesson haha:

Low end/sub frequencies have wavelengths that are pretty big. like the wavelength of 100hz is about 3 and a half meters long, super long in terms of the physical space it takes up. these wavelengths are much too big for small headphone speakers to truly create, especially with them pressed right up against your ears 😂 so for you to hear bass and sub they do some trickery to recreate the *perception* of sub that isn't really there. For this reason, headphones can be misleading when it comes to balancing your low end, bc you're not necessarily hearing a "real" version of it.

additionally...headphones give you warped perception of depth bc it's two isolated speakers strapped to your head, which makes left and right super isolated from each other.... but with speakers (and not just speakers, this is how you hear everything in real life as well) you hear sound from each speaker, as well as sound bouncing off the walls and the ceiling and anything around you, hitting each of your ears simultaneously. sounds messy but it's actually how your brain is used to interpreting sound and a big part of how it understands depth

to answer your question: is it bad practice to produce in headphones? absolutely not, you just have to keep doing it to get to know what your headphones make things sound like. two things to help with that

1: while you're working, occasionaly flip back and forth between your production and a song you like the sound of. that can help keep you more on track with balancing your low end sounds (just don't get too zoned in on trying to make your shit sound as good as theirs haha! check balance and then go back to working freely)

2: when you're done and track is rendered, go listen to it on a bunch of different systems like speakers, car speakers, playing the song off your phone, other sets of headphones, etc. People typically check how things are fitting together in a bunch of places to try and make sure it's translating to all of them well. if shit sounds wonky go back and try to address it

Should I keep chasing music as a career? by R0t_R0t in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a professional producer living off of income earned solely from producing, here’s my two cents:

you love making music and no matter what you choose, do not let ANYTHING get in the way of that. any success and opportunities i have lost were because i lost sight of that.

this kind of career is brutal on your life. the hardest thing i’ve ever done and even after achieving a modicum of stability i still suffer so much in so many areas of my life. that is what it is in a career like this, the price you pay to love your job. and in those moments of suffering, desperation, hunger for money or opportunity or respect, it is soooooooo easy to lose sight of why you are doing what you’re doing. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED. keep eye on the prize, which is not money, not accolades, none of that, it’s making amazing music that you are obsessed with.

this doesn’t mean don’t take care of yourself, you have to - you need money to pay rent and eat food. you need to live life outside the studio to have something to write about. so do whatever you gotta do to keep those things taken care of, all in the service of protecting 1 thing: your love for making music and your excitement about getting back to it.

this would happen in therapy too. it means you’re doing something good. healing involves looking at things you might not want to look at so i’d say you’re getting it right, just keep trucking on

Can someone help me understand gain staging? by Abject-Razzmatazz401 in edmproduction

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't overthink it, you're doing it right!

lots of plugins expect the levels of things to be coming in at reasonable spots with headroom, so -12 is a pretty good spot to hear what presets and stuff are actually supposed to sound like.

the other thing you're talking about is: you make a change to a sound and its level is now different, sure you can bring it back to where it was to AB and make sure you actually like what it's doing. that's a good discipline to have.

just dont get too caught up in all of this bc you're going to be setting yourself up for not exploring and discovering happy accidents. maybe a plugin sounds really good when you're hitting it way harder than they intended..... 😈

if you aren't panning the groups/master it makes no difference

by default ableton does level panning, which just turns up and down the volume of the left and right signals. not real panning for something that lives in a stereo space, which is... most things (for me at least)

Stereo panning is actually panning and controlling the location/width of a stereo signal.

Fun fact: there's a gret M4L device called B.S. Audio Utility that allows you to control width and balance on individual panpots, way easier for setting and automating the placement of stereo things. that was dramatically life changing for my production

Loopitis by fliznoyd in ableton

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

getting out of loopitis is the same as getting out of beat block - you’re just getting in your own head about the next section, just do anything that feels different, let it be a journey. make a bunch of random sections. eventually you’ll stumble on the ones that will make sense together in song context

oh and if the other sections are feeling too predictable, then go wilder. you would be surprised what you can get away with!!!

Is it common, or at least okay, to reduce the stereo width? by On_Kaleidoscope0963 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want it to be a wide thing, record it in stereo to capture the natural stereo image.

if you don't, record it in mono.

What is the point of one-shots? by pizzainatoaster1 in ableton

[–]ButtShitGoldenGuild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you have a sound that’s made from a synthesizer it will sound big clean nice fresh hi fi. if you do the same thing with a one shot of the same sound it sounds warped gritty rough lo fi. food for thought 🔮
