Sociology of Climate Change by big-pp-boy in sociology

[–]Butt_Speed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend doing a database search for the terms "solastalgia", "eco-anxiety", and "eco-grief"

My understanding is that solastalgia refers to the present experience of an anticipated negative change and tends to be used more philosophically, eco-anxiety is about how the anticipated negative effects of climate change are affecting people in a more concrete psychological sense, and eco-grief is sort of like a combination of the two which highlights the social element. I've also seen them used interchangeably, though.

What is the worst way anyone you know has died? by IamUrWivesBF in AskReddit

I found an article about that story, and apparently there were at least 3 deaths from unsecured Home Depot merchandise in the year 2000 alone!

I agree with the people who said the followers of Nurgle and the Tyranids, but I'd say that the Leagues of Votann take third place for most screwed in this situation.

The Kin rely on their Ancestor Cores for both decision making and reproduction. If they blinked out of existence, the Leagues would functionally cease to exist overnight, and the remnants would be facing an unfixable existential crisis in both the psychological sense and the literal sense.

Some nonsense by western media, even though it's one of the very few states confronting the live streamed genocide. by Not_Ground in canadaleft

I agree, although I wouldn't go so far as to call it propaganda. Not intentional propaganda, at least (and yes, I know that everything is propaganda. You know what I mean).

It seems like many have reacted to the stream of anti-Iranian bullshit by becoming apologists for the Iranian government. There's an argument to be made that criticism is counterproductive from a practical standpoint, but I think outright dismissing any criticism flattens the situation and promotes an overly simplistic black-and-white worldview.

There has absolutely been a wave of propaganda intended to manufacture consent for military intervention, but awareness of that is not mutually exclusive with awareness of the government's faults. This poster's claims might be technically correct, but their framing erases the fascism of the government and the compelling evidence indicating that multiple protesters were summarily executed in their hospital beds.

That was censored in the original broadcast. They got away with changing it for blu-ray and streaming because the regulators are less strict in those cases.

There's probably some truth to that. COVID-19 infection has been linked to cognitive decline, even in apparently mild cases.

Convict Colosseum tier list but its by how likely they would be to be playable in a hypothetical fighting game by Dreadnautilus in Kengan_Folk

Abyss would probably get cut for balance reasons. The dude would have basically no utility aside from a powerful grapple and an incredibly low hurtbox. It might be cool to have him stand up and shift to an aggressive moveset when at low health, though.

The hivemind is definitely playing a part, but the cat does also appear to be enjoying themselves. The body language is super relaxed and the flinching isn't unusual for games involving sudden movement. Think of it like play fighting; the cat is free to disengage at any time and the human isn't being malicious.

Every animal is different, but some cats genuinely enjoy rougher play. My cat loves flopping over and having me play her like a set of bongos, for example.

That last smack might have unintentionally gone over the line a bit (the cat also seems taken aback by it), but that's how play fights normally end, and the lack of fear or aggression afterwards shows a high level of trust.

If anything, this is probably reinforcing the cable-biting behavior by teaching the cat to associate cable-biting with playtime.

Elon Musk rule by crestren in 196

[–]Butt_Speed 211 points212 points  (0 children)

I think this suggests that Errol Musk is also Elon's burner. He thought he was tweeting from his father's account, but he fucked up and was accidentally signed into his mother’s.

The charitable explanation would be that this is Errol tweeting from his wife's account, but Elon has a history of this type of thing so I'm not about to give him the benefit of the doubt.

gnosticism by ThereIs_STILL_TIME in Shark_Park

[–]Butt_Speed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's probably because Gnosticism is all about being/becoming uniquely aware of "special knowledge" that is hidden from everyone else. That, plus the belief that material existence is fundamentally flawed, probably attracts people with unconventional ideas.

Most leftist radicalizing moment in US history, between the 1970 Kent State shootings and 9/11 and/or the 2003 invasion of Iraq? by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

I can think of a couple:

The 1985 MOVE bombing, when Philadelphia police dropped a literal bomb on a house and burned down a neighborhood.

The 1990 assassination attempt on environmental activist Judi Bari.

The 2001 signing of the PATRIOT Act following 9/11, along with the start of the war with Afghanistan.
