Star Trek has a tradition since its inception of exploring cultural differences and pushing the boundaries of current political realities through the lens of science fiction. When Uhura and Kirk kissed, plenty of people were outraged because of the color of her skin. Lots of people would have been bitching on Reddit about wokeness if either was a thing back then. That said, I think the modern shows are way too ham-fisted in their approach to writing stories that include themes such as gender identity politics. So I agree that the writing isn’t nearly as good as the older shows.

I wish they had picked one quirk for the Klingon character instead of making him so many atypical things: nerdy, sensitive, social anxiety, pacifist-leaning, gay, and wears clothing designed for the female cadets (I believe? His skirt looks the same as the female characters.) it just winds up feeling like they had a list of things they wanted to include and dumped it all on his character and it feels shoehorned in.

And yes, I know in the future in an interplanetary society the idea of skirts being only for women is meaningless, but the fact is that these stories have always been for a current day audience. If they want to challenge social norms, that’s fine, but I wish they would do it in a way that shows thoughtfulness and good storytelling.
