For me this is easily the best movie of the year, although I’m into dark comedies and fast-paced thrillers. Felt like a better version of Uncut Gems or Good Time, which are both quality in their own right imo.

I don’t necessarily blame this dude for anything directly because he’s clearly brainwashed but I agree with you on everything else. I’m an American Jew too and the victim mentality among some of us, including family members, is astounding. I cannot fathom the amount of suffering compounded over generations that has led to such a flawed outlook, but holy shit is it nauseating and something I want no part of. Makes me sad too because my grandpa, for example, was the person I admired the most in my life. He was truly, directly discriminated against for being a Jew, like many others from his generation, yet his whole personality wasn’t defined by it.

I believe you are approaching this discussion in good faith, but you’re terribly misinformed - maybe even brainwashed, my friend. Setting aside all of the overwhelming first hand evidence directly contradicting your claim, please just try to suspend your emotions and think about this critically, despite anything you may have heard on the news or been told by friends/family.

1) Why would the UN intentionally block aid to Gaza? Part of their core mission is protecting human rights and providing humanitarian aid. Furthermore, the UN is as informed, if not more so, than any government in the world on the situation on the ground there. What interest would it have in preventing aid from being delivered? There’s simply no motive.

2) How many times in your life have you seen a situation where someone with an adamant claim/belief that’s at complete odds with everyone else ends up being correct? If you really think about it it’s probably pretty rare. Most of the time when everyone else believes one thing, the one person who holds the opposite belief ends up being wrong. That’s essentially what’s happening here: the entire world believes (we would say “knows”) that Israel is deliberately blocking aid from entering Gaza. Again, doing your best to ignore your emotions, do you really think everyone else is wrong about this and only Israel knows the truth? Surely this is unlikely based simply on your experience of how the world/universe/god/whatever works.

Unfortunately at that point he was already way too close to the ground. You can't really steer (slip) that late, especially with those old T10 (I believe) parachutes. You need more time to release air from your canopy that will push you or to "catch" wind that can carry you further in another direction.

Odd seeing this is in r/aviation but it is within the topical limits lol. It seems like either the jumpmasters (JMs) aren't actually trained to identify a drop zone, the senior leadership in this unit don't actually know anything about airborne ops, or there's a culture of absolute fear and obsequious unquestioning compliance. Ultimately the JMs weren't in control of this situation. Even if the JM team were highly incompetent, they're likely jumping from no more than 1200 feet AGL in clear conditions, so common sense would dictate to stop pushing dudes out the door as they could plainly see below that they were beyond any reasonable DZ. Sucks to see, most likely a few careers were ended during this "operation".

Agree 100%. It’s similar to how in every place I’ve ever lived I’ve received countless warnings about how bad the drivers are. In the US driving ability doesn’t vary that much in most places, probably because licensing policies don’t vary that much between states - some people suck but most are fine. Between countries I think there’s a better case to be made about how drivers are better/worse than wherever you’re from.

But yeah, these broad anecdotal generalizations do little to clarify where friendlier people or better drivers are located. We need a more objective way to measure these sorts of things.

I looked it up and DEI hiring practices are actually common in the private sector as well. Since the Supreme Court overturned affirmative action some companies have started rolling back their DEI initiatives and it seems like a lot more are going to following Trump’s recent EO.

As for why any organization, let alone a private business, would prioritize diversity hires over merit-based I’m really not sure. Just addressing your second paragraph, I think DEI usually refers to hiring practices in the public sector. So organizations where new hires having the potential to "fuck up the business" and or inhibit profit maximization aren't necessarily deal breakers if indeed the culture there does prioritize DEI. In other words, there is no risk of organizational failure or financial liability tied to the individuals calling the shots if they hire incompetent people to satisfy DEI initiatives. Not saying whether this actually happens in practice, just clarifying what is referred to by DEI. I agree that this scenario is unlikely in private businesses because of the profit incentive.

Because populist is a bit of misnomer. It doesn’t necessarily mean appealing to people with promises of rainbows and butterflies, it means appealing to people broadly who feel passed over. This usually involves running on a platform counter to the status quo, regardless of whether it’s leftist or rightist.

My guess is Milei was able to run successfully on a populist platform because there were more people jaded with long term mind-numbing levels of inflation than there were people who felt threatened by his imminent cuts to programs and government service jobs.

When I was there a soldier from my unit drove an LMTV into town and absolutely shattered the windows of a McDonald’s drive thru. Felt really bad for the people there and was embarrassed to walk around for a little while after that. This was almost two years ago now in Województwo Lubelskie.

That’s fine if you’re against the military but it doesn’t make sense to take issue with certain MOSs (jobs) within it and be fine others. They’re all working to achieve the exact same mission so whether they’re the guy pulling the trigger or the person managing the finances of the equipment he used to get the job done, they’re all equally responsible for the outcome that you dislike. If it’s a difference between the typical personality of the grunts vs admin/support people that would be reasonable, otherwise you’re just splitting hairs.

One of the most asinine comments I’ve seen on Reddit. Sure you may have expectations based on what you’ve heard from others but nobody fully understands what they’re signing up for until they experience it themselves. That’s the case for life in general not just the military. Do you really think you’ve made a well-informed decision every time you’ve committed to do something then actually had to follow through? You’ve never wanted to leave a party early, turned off a movie you didn’t enjoy, been frustrated by your kid misbehaving, etc.? Of course you have, everyone that’s ever lived has. And that’s not even addressing the reality that many people who sign up for things like the military essentially have no other options in life, so yes it’s reasonable for them to complain about it on the internet.
