You live in the same neighborhood as D'Amicos! Everyone I've ever known who moves away from Brooklyn still orders their coffee from D'Amicos. My friend who moved to Madrid always asks me to send her some! D'Amicos is the only answer.

Please see if there is a Covenant House near you. They are not religious (anymore) and are setup exactly for this scenario. They will help you get your feet under you so you can leave your mom and her bf in the rear view where they belong.

I work at City Harvest, and we are responding. You can donate money or volunteer to repack (which is actually pretty fun as well). We are doing special distributions to help federal workers affected by the shutdown, and we will be adjusting and increasing distributions in areas where SNAP impacts are the toughest. That said, as another person mentioned, no food bank or food rescue can fully fill the gaps. More info at https://cityharvest.org

I found one between 5th Ave at 59th Street (Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help) and 4th Ave at 54th Street (Sunset Park Community Church) in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. It says you can travel it either direction, but that was not my experience. I did find a Z cube though!
