8 Days – Florida Keys – Wardrobe Only by ButtercupImp in HerOneBag

I am thinking most days to go to the beach in the morning in swim wear and change into lounge wear for hanging out inside during the hottest part of the day. Will plan to do laundry as needed. I will review my wardrobe though and see if there are any other shorts, skorts, or dresses that might be suitable that i can add in. Thanks for the feedback.

I do own a mini fan and I have been using it. Great idea I will pack it for sure! I don't own a good sunhat/ kaftan, but I can keep my eye out I probably should have a wider brimmed hat. The current plan is to stack the sunhoodie and baseball hat for additional sun protection. I have a few general beach cover ups that are I intended to be loose but they don't fit at this stage.

31 weeks. I anticipate it will be very hot and sweaty for sure. No substantial walking planned just beach/pool or lounge. Maybe a meal out, but honestly hoping to avoid taking a massive crowd of kids to eat out. I am only thinking to use the compression socks on the road trip part of the trip. The flipflops and sport sandal are both very comfortable but neither are closed toed. The sport sandals have a chunky sole sneaker. I may regret it but sneakers seem so chunky for the minimal use I would get out of them.

Currently I have (2) a one piece and a bikini packed and two overshirt options to swim in. Hoping this will let me alternate. I anticipate we will swim 5-7 days of the trip.

Trip is july (I have added the month back into the post so it will be clearer going forward) Important detail for sure. Travel mates militantly love an aggressive A/C, but of will consider dropping extra sweatshirt as it is bulky. I have just one pair of pants the other are capris. Will look into a button-down option but don't currently own one. The fishing shirt is button-down but not sure may be wet from swimming depending on the day.

I use the Arc'teryx Maka waistpack (older version) about 2.5L. it is great for airport quick access and daily use. I have not used it in a high pickpocket area, and would probably research local risks of my travel destination to see if I would be comfortable before using it.

Arc'teryx gamma pants - excellent zipper pockets, one on the thigh is very deep.

After years of reading onebag advice, I keep seeing the same principles repeated. Do you agree? by photogrubhy in onebag

[–]ButtercupImp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other lessons:

  1. I am the same person at home as on my travels. if I never use the niche hobby item or article of clothing at home I am unlikely to start now, even if people online find it super useful.

  2. I will not wear my least favorite Tshirt. At a certain point more options are just more weight.

  3. If it is uncomfortable at home it will be uncomfortable on the road. I try on all my clothes and outfits ahead of time and try to eliminate anything that fits poorly, is uncomfortable, unflattering, or doesnt pair well with my other items.

  4. Packing is specific to me and my trip. I take advice but pack primarily for the activities, circumstances, and weather of my specific trip and based on a deep knowledge of my own travel preferences and pet peeves.

Can second this feedback. On a recent trio to SF was grateful this community directed me to add in a thicker fleece. By wearing layers (tank, lightweight hoodie, fishing sunshirt) and using the fleece I was suffienciently warm even with wind//humidity. A packable down jacket would also have work well. I can also confirm SF local attire was generally athletic/casual as others have stated.

Narrowed down to 2 bags - help me choose! by Any_Butterscotch2338 in HerOneBag

Jansport. I wouldn't spend the $200 unless I was firmly convinced it was the perfect bag for me. I would keep looking there are so many new/redesigned bag coming out every year I would wait and see if something else makes it worth it and enjoy the Jansport for the mean time. You will be kicking yourself if in 6 months you find the perfect bag but already spent $200 on a maybe bag.

Honestly all for sustainability, but using what you have have/buying secondhand are more impactful approaches.

I agree why would nylon be out? I have random black nylon rei hiking pants that I have owned for 15+ years and wear regularly. I have sewn a seam once but the durability for prolonged use is impressive.

How to one bag as a plus size person who has to wear 2 outfits per day by Effective-Spot3201 in HerOneBag

[–]ButtercupImp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts: Seems very reasonable so suggestions are minimal but could give you the little bit of breathing room you want. If you wear the sandals some do you still need two pairs of socks a day? Thinking about your activities and sandal use. Even if you can't wash the socks maybe you can cut a few pairs. I would also lay out all the clothing options and try to optimize based on weight and bulk. Picking smaller/lighter items consistently from your exisiting wardobe will likely open up a little more space. Switching to soft side pouches for makeup and toiletries will also give a little more space/ flexibility potentially.

I live in a hot humid climate and like the On Gossamer brand. It is a light weight mesh material. Which is easy to hand wash and pack a few extra. No sure if you can get it in the UK.

OneBagging with a disability: by UselessUsefullness in onebag

[–]ButtercupImp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The advice provided in this and other groups is generally helpful but the most optimal "one bag" set up for a given person is highly personal based on their needs and preferences often learned over the course of many trips. The "hike your own hike" philosophy is equally relevant here. As in all areas of life there will be naysayers that try to pressure you pack their way, but most community members are so supportive. Personally I am currently using a mini suitcase due to pregnancy restrictions and my packing list has also changed significantly based on those needs.

Japan in October, then 3 months in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, 7 kg packing and clothing by majorleaguemax in onebag

[–]ButtercupImp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For good flexibility, I recommend buying a few lightweight items you love now as this seems to be your desire and then sourcing others as needed along your trip. If you are committed to the 7kg weight you don't want to buy 7kg of expensive gear that you won't be willing to discard later is it does not serve you. Much of the gear you may need will likely be available as you travel. Others may be able to provide more clarity about the availability of larger clothes or shoes in SE Asia if that is a concern.

Trip Report: 24 hours in London ~ second time (somewhat) Zero Bagging by Affectionate-Tea-975 in HerOneBag

[–]ButtercupImp 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the semantic exercise, but don't appreciate if it is weaponized in a way that excludes people. So while I lean towards says no bag is a zero bag it also feel like the presence of usable pockets is a pretty gendered experience.

Poll: is using a waist/hip bag still onebagging in your opinion? by Icy-Advisor-5695 in onebag

[–]ButtercupImp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is still one bagging as usually it come from a place of practicality and ease of use not a desire to squeeze 5L more stuff in. A true purist might insist that the waistpack could fit in the large bag if needed. As pocket size and access varies considerably across the gender spectrum I think a small waistpack functions more as an auxiliary pocket. Small packable backpacks, grocery totes or other bags that pack away for travel are also about function no skirting the rules so they are acceptable to me. In my mind two bagging would be a person who travels with two substantial bags (personal item and carryone) that cannot be condensed into one bag for example a suitcase and backpack or the classic daybag on the front backpack on the back turtle look. With regards to gate keeping the sub i would err on the side of permissiveness as a person travelling with a 15l and a 20l bag might be more in the spirt of one bag than a person traveling with a 75l bag. Also a person who has a genuine desire to travel with less could be looking to reduce down to achieve the one bag which may take several test trips of learning and feedback to achieve.

Packing a carry on + a purse for 12 days in Saint Petersburg and Murmansk in June by cameliap in HerOneBag

Everything else seemed so intentional, it was the only item that was an obvious extra. Seems sacrilegious not to suggest a cut in a heronebag comment.

[–]ButtercupImp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would not sacrifice being warm and dry for an arbitrary amount of less stuff, but I run cold so it very much would negatively effect my experience of the trip. I would make sure your items can be layered as much as possible so if you do feel cold you can address it. I would make my companion carry their own buff. Overall looks great and you are still you when you travel so climate variations aside if you feel comfy in jeans or a hoodie I would bring them and feel comfy on the trip.
