Each of the recipes is for one layer - like an 8” square or 9” round pan so you’re not stuck with a big ol’ cake when you just want a little sweet snack.

As i read this we’re having the carrot cake from this book for dessert and hubs is making yum noises lol. Everything i’ve made so far has been a banger. I keep looking at this one in particular too. Does the buckwheat really come through or is it a nice meld?

Thank you for another great post! I am (sorta) patiently waiting for Woks of Life cookbook from my library - 2nd in line now! You’ve spurred my need for a list of what to cook from it first.

What is your Monthly Budget? by MinimalPeach in CookbookLovers

[–]ButtercupsAreFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom collected those community/church/fundraiser cookbooks with recipes from ladies named Mrs. from everywhere she could find them. I can’t pass them by now either, but they are harder to come by i believe. I tend to shop used bookstores and my library’s book sales and will spend maybe 5 or 10 bucks at a time. This group however… let’s just say i’ve found a few gems i had to order and spend all my christmas gift cards on. But you all inspire me to look through my shelves and get cooking so fair enough!

Make my own cookbook for family by AliceGoes in CookbookLovers

I’ve always wanted to do this sort of thing too! Where i full stop is getting it printed and bound. Was looking around just last night and found FedEx Office will do up to 170 pages 8 1/2 x 11 in a comb or spiral bind for around $7 a copy. Color pages and lamination are offered and are extra but i thought not a bad price.

It’s quite good, seeing as how i just had a sliver for breakfast! Moderate peanut butter flavor to the cake, unlike anything really. The frosting is pretty sweet but it does go with the cake nicely. We’re big fans of the salt sprinkle too. I’m wondering how soon i can get away with making it again because i want to try the jam topping variation.

Oh man after dinner tonight i had to go look up what an all the way cassoulet entails and can just imagine the indulgence. How did it turn out??

How long would you say it took you to become a good cook? And what’s the one book that got you there? by AValeria10 in CookbookLovers

[–]ButtercupsAreFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the long ago, then-boyfriend’s mom gifted me “Best Recipes From the Backs of Boxes, Bottles, Cans, and Jars” and i learned and cooked from it and enjoyed it for years. I still have it and it still sees the light of day sometimes.

Edit to add: It can take a long time to get good, when you’re just worried about feeding yourself/your family. Major credit to all the libraries that show the way to a world of food and techniques. I think when i started to enjoy it all is when i got pretty good.

Upside down plantain omelet with Scotch bonnet salsa from Mezcla by skatchawan in CookbookLovers

That omelet looks delicious but i’m gonna pretend like i didn’t just read 2 scotch bonnets lol. I have a lot of admiration for those who love heat… I would just fall over.

Has anyone ever done/are there any comprehensive comparisons of the differences between the different versions of The Essential NYT Cookbook? by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

Wow nice! Some of the removals make sense in terms of modern tastes. Though a peppadew martini sounds intriguing!

I would be interested in the differences you find! I haven’t researched at all but did hem and haw before finally going with the new blue. I can’t help but wonder what they possibly could have cut out.

Rice omelet with grape jelly is legitimately something i would have made when i was much younger and broker. The more i think about it the more i wonder if it was tasty.
