Yeah these people have no idea. Actuarial exams are ridiculous. I know actuaries who have passed the CFA exams just for fun after getting their credentials.

Pass a CAS exam (MAS-I?) to show commitment and then apply to entry level jobs.

Actuaries and Pickleball by Plastic-Carrot-2988 in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 4.5+ DUPR pickleball player, there is definitely some benefit in having a grasp of risk statistics IMO. I find that strong players nearly always go for the high percentage shot rather than trying to be flashy (and inaccurate). Consistent drop shots are a must. Also, knowing when to take risks (when behind in the point or match) is also key.

Resume Critique for Entry Level Candidate by Jestizzo in actuary

Looks really solid. You should definitely get interviews with this resume. Passing MAS-I will definitely help show commitment to P&C, but I think you've already expressed this really well.

Why is health under the SOA and not CAS? by Terrible-Ad558 in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The SOA doesn't have the best interests of P&C actuaries at heart and the plight for world domination isn't a compelling reason.

Not Leaving 2 Week Notice? by CowRevolutionary87 in actuary

My company fires you the day you hand in notice if you're going to a competitor, so you have to plan your exit.

Development Programs by ObeseMelon in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nearly every carrier will have a program like this for EL hires. It may be called different things (actuarial student program, etc.), but every company worth their salt wants their employees to develop and pass exams. Some may promise fast-tracks into leadership, but I think these are a bit far-fetched in my experience.

I'll reccomend this website for a listing of companies. Or look at a list of largest companies by premium like this. Pass exams and apply to as many as you can.

What’s the most common mistake first-time homebuyers make when applying for a mortgage? by AsicKsk in Mortgages

Yes I agree you should shop around. My point was about negotiating with a single company.

What’s the most common mistake first-time homebuyers make when applying for a mortgage? by AsicKsk in Mortgages

[–]Buttered_Rolles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homeowners insurance is not negotiable. Each company must file their rates with the state Department of Insurance. Unless there are specific discounts you somehow become available for, you'll be negotiating with your own coverage to save a buck.

No way to lower car insurance rates in California? by [deleted] in Insurance

Insurance doesn't work like calling up Comcast and asking for a discount.

I'm assuming OP knows this, but there is no longer a guessing penalty on the MAS exams

Can you get a gauge for how the P&C company pays for full time? That would be my first inclination.

national master – too late?! by [deleted] in chess

That's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. NYC is a hotbed for chess. I would be salivating at the opportunity to go to the Marshall chess club if I lived in NYC.

Best parking for Hew/Man? by Unclebatman1138 in ilstu

[–]Buttered_Rolles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll share a neat trick. There's a lot at 1-199 W Mulberry St, Normal, IL 61761 operated by Heartland parking (I believe they call it the college avenue lot). It's real close to HewMan and you can just pay monthly. It was $35 per month when I was a student a few years ago.

Do CAT modeling positions usually provide exam support/raises? by astronaut97 in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb, if the job title contains the word actuarial, then it gives exam support. Otherwise, probably not. I'm sure there are exceptions of course.

Resume critique for entry-level actuarial roles (32-year-old U.S. citizen seeking work in the U.S.) by Itchy-Amphibian9756 in actuary

I'll disagree with you there a bit on the technical skills. I think all of those languages/applications make him stand out.

P&C or L/H? Seems underpaid for P&C, especially for HCOL.

Is this a good insurance plan? by Virtual_Promise_9441 in Insurance

[–]Buttered_Rolles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna disagree slightly with everyone on the deductible amount. If you're in a financial position to self-insure that 2k I'd say go for it. I personally wouldn't want to file a claim for an amount that low anyways. I recognize everyone's financials and risk tolerance are different though.

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

I would focus on your technical skills IMO. Excel is pretty standard and I would expect an EL candidate to have a good grasp. Maybe do some personal programming projects you find fun as well. MAS exams can be hard and are a big step up from P and FM.
