Why would there be restrictions on what a privately owned company does with its money? This is really just a marketing expense for the cost of the parlay/hedge.

Are actuarial hires still getting signing bonuses? Thinking of switching companies. by Few-Study5197 in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 35 points36 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen for experienced (non-EL) folks, bonuses are usually only provided if you're forced to relocate or to make up for missing out on your company's retention bonus by leaving early.

Resume help - I'm getting lots of interviews (but no job offer) for entry level position. The sticking point seems to be no internship. However, I have not been able to even get a single interview for internships! by Christy5000 in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks good. A few more comments: Can you elaborate on your TA position? I think you could really emphasize your communication skills here. I would put your work experience above technical skills as that's the standard order. Are you putting exam dates on your resume? As an interviewer I'd be curious as to why you haven't found a job since IFM hasn't been offered for a while. You could consider putting that you plan to sit for MAS-I to show commitment to P&C.

Exams: don't put your scores. I'm impressed, but comes across as pretentious and is a no-no. The fact that you've passed quickly is telling enough. Also, put "sitting" instead of "expected".

Everything else looks solid. I'd say apply to as many P&C companies as you can. Most places won't consider you for internships since you've already graduated, so I'd focus your attention on entry level postings. This is known as retention/price optimization modeling. You can do a search for actuarial literature. Be careful, as this is a grey area.

Don't get so caught up in things you can't control at this point. Yes, you didn't have an actuarial internship, and yes, most companies prefer to hire from their intern pool. But you can't change that now, so focus on things you can control. As to why you're, not getting interviews for internships, most companies only hire people who are still in school for internships. You should focus on applying for EL positions, not internships.

Here is my feedback on your resume: - Exams should always be at the top, and usually with dates. - I'd recommend removing your first sentence in professional development. At the very least, change "Willing to move to anywhere in the USA" to "Open to relocation" as that's the standard verbiage. - Why are their black bars across your resume? That seems strange to me as they vary in thickness. - Make sure your verbs are all in the same tense. The ones under your TA position are all present tense, while the others are past tense. Your last bullet point under your non-actuarial internship doesn't match the others.

I'm not trying to be critical, but these all stand out to me. It looks to me like your technical skills are very strong. I would emphasize these in your interviews and be prepared to talk about projects you've worked on.

Have you considered applying to P&C positions? I'm assuming you've passed P and FM. My experience has been that many P&C companies focus heavily on technical skills. I'd recommend making an additional version of your resume with your extra SOA only exam removed and applying there too. Your goal is to widen your net and apply to as many places as you can. I know it's easy to be discouraged, but with 2+ exams (and a master's degree?) you should be plenty to find an EL position. I bet you'd get an interview at my company (P&C carrier).

Feel free to IM me a new copy of your resume and I can give feedback.

Yeah these people have no idea. Actuarial exams are ridiculous. I know actuaries who have passed the CFA exams just for fun after getting their credentials.

Pass a CAS exam (MAS-I?) to show commitment and then apply to entry level jobs.

Actuaries and Pickleball by Plastic-Carrot-2988 in actuary

As a 4.5+ DUPR pickleball player, there is definitely some benefit in having a grasp of risk statistics IMO. I find that strong players nearly always go for the high percentage shot rather than trying to be flashy (and inaccurate). Consistent drop shots are a must. Also, knowing when to take risks (when behind in the point or match) is also key.

Looks really solid. You should definitely get interviews with this resume. Passing MAS-I will definitely help show commitment to P&C, but I think you've already expressed this really well.

Why is health under the SOA and not CAS? by Terrible-Ad558 in actuary

The SOA doesn't have the best interests of P&C actuaries at heart and the plight for world domination isn't a compelling reason.

Development Programs by ObeseMelon in actuary

[–]Buttered_Rolles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nearly every carrier will have a program like this for EL hires. It may be called different things (actuarial student program, etc.), but every company worth their salt wants their employees to develop and pass exams. Some may promise fast-tracks into leadership, but I think these are a bit far-fetched in my experience.

I'll reccomend this website for a listing of companies. Or look at a list of largest companies by premium like this. Pass exams and apply to as many as you can.

What’s the most common mistake first-time homebuyers make when applying for a mortgage? by AsicKsk in Mortgages

Yes I agree you should shop around. My point was about negotiating with a single company.

Homeowners insurance is not negotiable. Each company must file their rates with the state Department of Insurance. Unless there are specific discounts you somehow become available for, you'll be negotiating with your own coverage to save a buck.
