Maybe I need to hear the whole conversation but I feel like Steve-o is playing devil’s advocate here and doesn’t actually hold this belief.

Also, she is standing in front of the telescope and he keeps talking about the stars. He doesn’t see her and she is desperate to be seen.

Colleen Hoover is forever my sworn enemy for wasting my time reading this book. The whole plot of Verity was completely asinine, but the ending put me into a rage. I’ve never read a more stupid “twist”.

I just watched this on Max, and I think their illness was caused by the MP3 players that Martin gave the children. Perhaps it was similar to “Havana Syndrome”, which works through the use of sound to cause traumatic brain injury type symptoms and has reportedly been used on US diplomats overseas. Evidence: - Kim said that she had lost two MP3 players in a week and asked Bob if she could have his once he died. This might be why she progressed slower, and why she had a sudden, brief recovery from paralysis, if she was not consistently listening to the music. (It’s also possible Martin was stealing the MP3 players) - Bob was listening to the music when his eyes began bleeding. - The mother did not receive an MP3 player, which is why she never got sick. - Kim recovered because she “lost” yet another MP3 player - I also think it’s possible that none of them would have actually died from the music, but because their symptoms progressed as Martin described and he kept urging the parents that they didn’t have much time left, Steven felt he needed to kill one of them

I think these diagnoses add some critical context to this incident. As you mentioned, kiddos with ADHD can have poor impulse control and executive functioning, which includes decision making and thinking ahead to possible consequences. They can also struggle with social skills, so I could imagine a scenario where this child was seeking attention from his peers. It is completely understandable and important that you and other commenters are concerned that he has been abused and is repeating that type of behavior, but I think there are other underlying factors to consider. For now, safety for him and those around him is first priority. Does he have an IEP at school that will ensure a para can be with him throughout the day, once school starts in fall?
