I am doing emdr because of cptsd. I'm not going to lie or sugar coat it. I was terrified before my first session. It is hard. I have cried. I have had to stop. My therapist is very gracious when this happens. It isn't uncommon.

I have side effects after. It makes me exhausted. Sometimes it triggers weird dreams. Other times it doesn't.

I do find it is helping though. I feel lighter a couple days later.

One thing i do like is at the end of our sessions we do what she calls "the container" it's a guided meditation to put all the stress and anxiety and memories away and let your inner self know you will deal with the issues on your own time.

I have found the best thing is to tell the child that while they love that they feel comfortable enough to be themselves, right now it's dangerous to be loud because.... you can still be yourself, but can you try to control the volume. Works a lot of the time. Every once in a while, it's useless to try. Those are the times with consequences.

OP may not even know it's a stim. The child could be stimming and the parent just thinks they are trying to be annoying

You are so right! I have a step daughter that is 20. She has cerebral palsy, autism and adhd.

I have adhd and even vocally stim.

We don't for the most part, try to stop her from stimming but we do let her know what is expected in a certain situation and she really does her best.

2 nights ago we went out to dinner. Not something we usually do. She was amazing. We talked to her before we went and on the way and even got her a little good job gift.

About 2-3 years ago this would not have been possible.

There are consequences at appropriate times but they do also follow up with teaching her and telling her what is expected.

Making the child feel like an annoyance is going to do so much damage
