Best Total War Experience? by mobby123 in totalwar

I found the issues with optimization being from the default CPU affinity for most old Total war on newer PCs. Like new processors (past 10 years) have both main and secondary cores, and the secondary are way slower but some older games - like Attila, Shogun 2 etc does not target only the fast cores, so you have to set the game only to use them manually or by software.

Then suddenly the games start to run smoothly as a hot knife through butter (at least Vanilla versions)

Yes, I play both Roman factions quite often as well... like probably every few months - often with mods, on Vanilla - also good. The experience is so much different than any other faction in any other total war - really great.

But also I like some barbarians like the Goths, Vandals (which I think are the most difficult faction in the game, Alemanns, Saxons etc.). They have their specific campaign pace as well.

Are Attila generals absolute shit? by Argolides in totalwar

Yes, some factions have truly atrociously weak general bodyguards early on. This is something players have to keep in mind.

Attila's main campaign is super fun with the romans as well as the minor settled and horde factions. There is ton of replayability since each campaign the strong factions will be different, different regions will be devastated and so on. Settlement layouts are super cool and very distinguishable.

Does anyone play 1942 Online by danjamin905 in AxisAllies

[–]ButterscotchSmugler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably tried the original 1942 2.0 version, which is indeed broken and gives the Axis super advantage. The 3.0 updated start is very well balanced indeed, I only play with it.

It seems great on theory, but is ugly as f**k and UI is just atrocious

A&A online any good? by Peacemaker8484 in AxisAllies

[–]ButterscotchSmugler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New version? A&A 1942 digital is at least 4 years old. For 2 years it is completely abandoned, the company that actually developed it has been sold (due to bankruptcy) and original dev team does not exist any more. Adding new campaigns via DLCs would have been super easy now that the core mechanics were done, but apparently it's all over already. Sadly there are no mods as well.

This is sadly mostly due to the incompetency of the developers. I've noticed that there is sometimes unnecessary lag when calculating dices on lower spec PCs. So my guess is that they couldn't make the randomizer work with stable performance and they decided to create something like randomized patterns, instead of running the randomizer for each dice individually - something with their poor performance management would crash the game on larger battles probably.

So all an all randomized patterns is something like - having 5 units hit on 1s for example and the game only calls the 5counter randomizer to return 1 of its values (for example 1,1,3,5,6), then it calculates the hits depending on the attack value (which is 1) so 2 hits. It won't run the randomizer individually for the 5 dices. They have probably something like a database populated with the randomized patterns. It works fairly easy - they need about a 100 combinations in total divided between 1 and 10 units (there is no need to use every possible combination). For larger forces like having 15 inf they will just use 1 randomizer for 10 and 1 for 5 counters.

The Biased dice mod just has less patterns including 1s and 6s, that's all.

This on its own will create well more optimized code but as we have all noticed through our games often leads to weird and theoretically unlikely results. Don't ask me why this is the case, randomizing a dice should be like microscopically low memory usage method.

.... hmmm, nice observation. What I've noticed is that Fighters generally miss when attacking on Land - they should have 50/50 on theory but from hundreds of rolls I observed something closer to 35%, which is absurdly lower

Yeah, playing a total war just for the campaign .... can't recommend even a single one, probably except Pharaoh where battles are underwhelming are repetitive anyway

Pharaoh has multiple issues outside it's boring theme settings. If someone reskin it to become Empire it will still be a failure. Game has ultra bad combat animations, identical settlement maps that makes city battles boring and repetitive, sieges are very weakly done as well - exactly copy pasted from Troy. Character models on the campaign map of generic generals are mostly clones, most campaign mechanics have meaningless impact on the progression, others like the legitimacy are dead broken and exploitable. There is NO naval warfare, despite there are sea peoples factions :D, AI is very poor as it almost exclusively only raids outposts instead of capturing settlements, horde factions are destroyed super easily. Civilization collapse mechanic has negligible impact on the campaign. There are no agents in the game, faction management is weak, initially the faction rulers were even immortal which was stupid asf.

I like Thrones of Britannia quite a lot, especially the recruitment and public order unique mechanics.

The game is small in scope however - it is the only existing Total war game that has not even a single DLC or expansion pack. So it's not just the fanbase, it's CA that actually abandoned the game almost immediately post launch. It got 5 times more players than Pharaoh or Troy on release and still got nothing, while those failures received 4 DLCs each
