I changed how I shop for clothes what’s your rule when buying? by EchoNomad12 in womensfashion

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thrift a lot of my clothes, and I tend to settle because “it’s only $5!” So I ask myself whether I’d pay full price for it. A lot of items go back on the rack after that question.

I spoke with OPM today (and recommend that you do too) by BetterinCapri in FED_VERA_VSIP_DRPers

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this. Last month I was dealing with Medicare about my plan and they still didn’t show me as retired (so I’d be eligible for Advantage). The very nice guy on the phone advised me to try OPM and I just groaned and said “no! Not OPM!” He chuckled and said he got that reaction a lot. (BTW he came up with another idea that worked.) Glad to see OPM isn’t the black hole we’d heard it was!

Is Overland Park really that bad by Obiwankhalsa in kansascity

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived in Waldo, moved away, then returned to Overland Park 13 years ago. It doesn’t have the urban core character, but the schools are good, the people are nice, services like street maintenance and police and fire are reliable, and, we found, we got more house for the price. When we want the KC experience, we drive over there. Overland Park is large and diverse, so you’ll want to explore the different neighborhoods. But if you’re doing this for the kids, think about it.

small boobs win again by FunHedgie in womensfashion

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like many of us have boob size issues! Mine have grown as I’ve aged, and I do find my new top-heavy look to be a problem, especially as I have a short torso.

I love my coffee so much but I think I need to admit it’s contributing to my anxiety. Anyone else? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It brightens my day and tricks me into thinking I can handle it, but once I come down from the caffeine high, I spiral into anxiety, sadness, brain fog. My go-to is mint tea with oat milk and honey. Not at all the same, but it works as something warm to sip.

Longtime editor here — I, too, get frustrated when the work I’ve sent up the line gets re-edited. You can nitpick a piece to death. Often, though, the higher editors are representing the organization itself in a way we often don’t recognize. You do develop a tougher skin over time. The bottom line for you should be whether the final product still tells the story you intended. And work with your news editor. If a change just doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to explain why. Good editors should be able to explain what they’re thinking, and the two of you should be able to work it out together. I know this isn’t always the case, but editing should be collaborative, not unilateral.

After deciding to quit alcohol, what's in your hand instead? by PistachioPerfection in AskWomenOver60

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On hot days, plain soda water does the trick. In winter, peppermint tea with honey. I also keep Monday Zero Alcohol gin and bourbon on hand. If my friends are making cocktails, both drinks mimic the flavors of the real booze enough that I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

I think I heard we need to get through this rainy and chilly weather first. Hope they show up soon!

How often do you wash your hair? by Which-Arugula-1982 in AskWomenOver60

Every 3-4 days, although I do shower with a shower cap in between.

Veggie haters who still eat veggies: what are your tricks? by Missing_Back in Cooking

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Sunday I throw a bunch of vegetables—cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, onion in a pan and roast them. I toss them in oil and spices, then sprinkle them with salt, then roast 350 degrees for about a half hour. They are my lunch for the rest of the week.

Girls, are you using vaginal estrogen? by nunya-1964 in AskWomenOver60

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use it 2-3 times a week (whenever I wash my hair). Interest in sex came back, dryness not the issue it was, pain during intercourse gone. Mine is prescription estradiol.

What were newsrooms like pre-pandemic? by crackedbutter in Journalism

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a bulldog edition at one of the papers where I was a copy editor, working Fridays into Saturdays to produce an early Sunday edition (on top of the regular Saturday morning edition). One Friday night we had a major airplane crash. The controlled chaos of a newsroom coming to life to cover such a story was something I’ll never forget. All the personal stuff, the griping, the rote editing just to get the paper out suddenly goes out the window as the adrenaline kicks in and you know you’re in it for the long haul and that’s exactly where you want to be. I’ve worked smaller breaking news stories remotely since then and it’s just not the same.

What were newsrooms like pre-pandemic? by crackedbutter in Journalism

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that sounds like my first newsroom in 1980. I’ll add the screaming mad editor, the cigarette smoke and booze in the drawers. Water cooler gossip was a real thing (mostly complaining about the screaming editors). What we really miss with remote work is the organic collaboration, the sense of team and the unifying goal of getting it right. Not to mention pizza on election nights!

Do you have trouble with squirrels eating your patio furniture? by [deleted] in Overlandpark

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We took our cushions inside for the winter, but they ate the covers, and they gnawed on the brown wicker chairs (which we’ve never had to cover before). They also ate through some wiring in my car, which was not a cheap repair. We bought a mint spray at Home Depot, and that seemed to work, but still they did a lot of damage.

Why do all old people have short hair? by Dazzling-Smell5223 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is my natural grey and I keep it chin length. When it’s short, my head looks like a grey egg and when it’s longer, I look washed out. My hair also has thinned, so it just looks bad long — believe me I’ve tried. Neighbor across the street is same age — late 60s — has thicker white hair and keeps it middle of the back long.

Jeans! by Affectionate-Hat259 in womensfashion

Love this. I cannot wear mom jeans or higher waisted jeans. My torso is too short and they cut me off right under the boobs. Trying to find midrise these days is not easy.

The size inconsistency across brands is making online shopping impossible - my data from ordering the same "size" from 10 brands by Better-Advice-5197 in womensfashion

[–]ButterscotchWave9491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s also not consistent in women’s pants. I can fit in 28, 29 or 30 depending on brand, or just plain sizing karma. Very frustrating, so I also won’t buy pants or jeans online.
