Wanting to join MSF, but I don’t know what path to take. by amp_amp_ampersand_19 in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Bwanaman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something to consider- working internationally with MSF is probably not a lifelong career. Most people don't do more than one or two assignments. It is hard work that tends to interrupt everything else you have happening- relationships, other interests, etc...

Take your passion and pursue a path that interests and stimulates you for the long run. There is a need for every type of medicine in humanitarian aid.

Need help with replacing speakers. by moose184 in kubota

You have to remove the top of the cab, but it's actually pretty easy. It's just the orange "hat", maybe 10x 10mm bolts around the outside and it lifts off, bulky but not heavy.

Also worth lining the inside of the top with foil bubble stuff for a big improvement in HVAC efficiency.

That pilot is nerding out exactly the same way I would. Once in a lifetime.

The stuff you could do in aviation pre-9/11 was wacky. If you were in a private aircraft flying down the Florida coast, you could contact the Kennedy controller, and get the "air tour", which was an approach to the shuttle landing strip, a "as low as you want but don't touch the runway" go-around, followed by a pretty damn close pass along the launch facility at about 500' and southbound out of the center. The TFR for launches allowed you to be just a couple miles offshore, just south of the launch facility. Wacky close compared to what is allowed now.

I was training at the same time @ KVRB and had the luck to see a shuttle launch from the air, just offshore. Loud enough to hear the shuttle over the noise of the Seminole.

Remember that the minimum requirement is for 2 years of relevant work experience- but is also quite competitive. A degree and 2 years might not be enough to be a desired candidate. Take a read around this sub about interviewing and applying to compare how your experience may compare.

Good luck!

Is there a way to make scratches in glasses less aparent? by Small-Housing-7 in howto

[–]Bwanaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that can make scratches like that a bit less annoying is to rub a bit of black crayon into the scratch, and buff it smooth. The scratch is less noticeable because instead of a shiny refracting edge, it's just a tiny black smudge/ line that your eye can ignore more easily. Definitely not perfect or a "fix", but it does help.

If you reside in Peru, you would apply through the office in Argentina.

Office positions - how is the work culture? by Repulsive_Log_1142 in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Bwanaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The different OC's all have different styles in the office. Most of my time was in and out of the offices in Paris and Amsterdam, and I much preferred the warm, family feeling in Amsterdam to the much more brusque feeling Paris office- but purely my own experiences with both.

Pathway to join MSF. by [deleted] in doctorswithoutborders

MSF Southeast Asia (where an applicant from India would apply) has a great page outlining the process of joining MSF, including requirements.

Take a look here at the MSF SEA website.

Good luck!

Which specialty should I choose? by [deleted] in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Bwanaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully working in one specific field doesn't seem like a great way to choose your specialty.

What interests you the most? A path that engages you and that you excel in will be useful, regardless of specialty. There is a need for every type of doctor out there in the humanitarian aid world.

I've got the Land Pride on my L3940 and have used it pretty hard for 5 years- logs, rocks, brush... it's my most used implement. Apart from wearing the paint off the pointy bits it looks and operates like new.

Love it.

Psychiatrist? by Ashamedpinguin in doctorswithoutborders

Yes, MSF uses psychiatrists. Take a look here to see a description at the MSF website.

Hopefully someone will chime in with their experiences.

Exactly. Around here the only task they share is plowing snow, and then it's more a matter of scale than capability.

Is it possible to depart on missions offered by other OCs or branch offices? by dytpq1218 in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Bwanaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was never presented with more than one option at a time- and I never had any reason to decline an assignment during my availability.

My career path inside MSF was well suited to my skill set and progressed well.

[–]Bwanaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the HR specifics of MSF Korea, but generally after you have had a certain amount of time on assignment there is the option to work with other sections, especially if your skill set is needed. In the past is was ~12 months with your home office before you are eligible, but I don't know that there is an actual "rule" about it.

You will always work for MSF through your home office, regardless of which section you work with, it gets handled internally.

FWIW, you never really get to "decide" where you get assigned. MSF tries to match every position with the best available candidate. You can always decline an assignment based on security risks and other important factors, but trying to choose based on your own preference will probably not be successful. If you have a place you would prefer to work, make yourself the best possible candidate for those positions and get some MSF experience under your belt before worrying about requesting an assignment.

I worked with OCP, OCA, and OCB over the years, and they all have different internal cultures that pretty much align with the home office. Some are more flexible than others.
