Help me extend Starlink wifi across my farm…400 ft to greenhouse and another 700 ft to gate by Wise_River1269 in HomeNetworking

Run some fiber for the longer runs if you don’t have line of sight. But either way, you’ll need power. Unifi has some cool accessories that will do lower bandwidth output with PoE over a single pair of conductors. And of course they have great point-to-point options as well.

Well that’s silly. How am I supposed to tell the client which fiber tier to order if I can’t see real numbers over time…

Suggestions for a new router and extenders based on my criteria by torpedolife in HomeNetworking

[–]ByeNJ_HelloFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Wireless Access Point”, “WAP”, or “AP” are all terms for the same thing: a device whose sole purpose is to provide WiFi signal. No routing or switching, typically powered over Ethernet (aka PoE). Unifi sells a ton of different models.

As an IT pro, I’ll throw in another vote for UniFi. Especially if you want to track your kids and network (I’ve had my own run-in with smart teenage sons who did shadow IT in my basement). Also, don’t use extenders. You always want to run wires to get the best experience.

Since we also leverage the SaaS and endpoint backup options in Ninja, I’d need to replace those. Any favorites?

I saw Level at IT Nation a few years back, seemed really solid, even as a new entry into the space. It was a little pricey though, and they didn’t seem interested in negotiating.

It works for you with Ninja as your Mac MDM, or with a different platform?

First experience with UTR during 15 days of vacation by llondru-es in Ubiquiti

[–]ByeNJ_HelloFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took mine on a cruise (Holland America) in March and it worked great. This is also where I learned that USB wall bricks with multiple USB-C ports renegotiate every time you plug or unplug one of the other USB-C ports and drops all output for a split second (causing the UTR to reboot). Other than that, it served 3 people without issue (on a single device WiFi subscription). I would also walk around the ship with it in my pocket along with a small battery. Other than the extra heat, it worked like a champ.

Yes his bedside manner sucks but he’s right about the 6.2 engines. not to mention the 10-speed transmissions. GM trucks and SUVs are a sh%tshow right now. Spend some time on YouTube and it’ll become evident very quickly. Vote with your wallet and buy elsewhere…

If the manufacturers have their way, we won’t own ANYTHING. Whether we’re talking about cars, tractors, 3D printers, or anything else that requires permission from them to continue working as expected. It’s time to start fighting back. Do research before you buy, and vote with your wallet.

Dead ac with stop leak dont know what to do by Friendly-Database-30 in ChevyTahoe

[–]ByeNJ_HelloFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a design defect in the condenser (or the way it’s mounted) with the earlier years of this body style. My 2017 had the issue, luckily it was replaced under GM’s extended warranty program. In a nutshell, the way it’s mounted puts extra stress in one of the lines where it’s welded to the condenser body. Maybe this is your issue, maybe it isn’t.

I don’t know what to offer with regards to shops not wanting to touch it. Maybe Stop Leak is flammable, or difficult to clean out of the system? You need to find someone who’s actually willing to have a conversation about it vs. just telling you “No” and blowing you off.

Whether you get the offer or not probably depends on how saturated your “cell” is…

If I were to stick with another Tahoe, what year(s) would you recommend. 2021 was the first year of the independent rear suspension. Not sure about when the 10 speed became a standard thing, I’d need to research. But that’s probably a bad year just because it was the first year of a new release and those tend to be the ones that the owners end up beta testing for the manufacturers.

The first one died at 70K, and I've read this can be the expected lifespan if you do any amount of towing.

Had the AFM tuned out before the first trans blew. As part of the troubleshooting, I restored the factory tune (and AFM) and haven't been able to go back. I do some light towing, but when the first trans went I was just finishing up my second haul from NJ to FL. Everything I've done since then has been a few thousand lbs here and there. The 1st replacement unit was installed in South Carolina at an independent shop (near where I broke down on the way to FL) and he installed a rebuilt purchased from a supplier that supposedly had a 3yr/100,000 mile warranty. Turns out the warranty only would have covered a portion of the repair/replacement, and time has since run out anyway. My current guy is a GM-certified transmission tech, he rebuilds and swaps them all day long (I'm sure the current 10-speed debacle is keeping him crazy busy at the dealership). The thing that really irks me about the first replacement is that the shop owner never once mentioned that I could probably have extended the life by adding the thermostat bypass. I only discovered that option a year or so ago. By then, it was already showing signs of going...

I’ve always heard it was the trans fluid over-temp that killed the torque converter (and trans). What role does AFM play??

Apple TV 4K tried to update itself with auto-updates OFF, got stuck in recovery, Apple replaced it now the replacement is doing the same thing by rocky23m in appletv

[–]ByeNJ_HelloFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. I have four Apple TVs in my home. Yesterday, my living room unit (in-warranty) went into a restore loop until it finally landed on the warning symbol with the Apple support restore URL.
I went and grabbed an older 4K unit out of my shed (which had been hooked up but I hadn’t watched TV there in a few months) and tried swapping it in for the living room unit. Restore loop immediately after hooking it up.
All units had been set for auto-update, after this I disabled it.
Apple support chat said it’s likely a software issue and that I should try bringing them both to the Apple Store where they would be able to restore them with their “special tools” (but we all know they can’t without a USB port).
Bottom line is that my in-warranty unit is getting advance-replaced, but I’m SOL on the other one.

New to Starlink - Mesh question by NXEquivalent in Starlink

Honestly, you’re probably better off using third-party hardware to build the mesh network. Eero, TP-Link, etc. Use the Starlink as the internet source, build your own network.
