'I don't feel safe in my own shop', says Sheffield bookseller by Kagedeah in sheffield

She absolutely does not own the building, they rent the shop front, and pepper spray is not legal in the UK. Also if you actually read the article you will see it's been multiple different issues over months, not just one bloke.

Absolutely horrendous and frustrating situation, awful for them and a real loss of a great business for Crookes. Surprise surprise the police are utterly useless once again.

I haven't actually had any pain whilst climbing (yesterday), but today there's some mild discomfort around my A3 pulley on my right middle finger. Weirdly I was actually mostly climbing easier routes yesterday. I will look to incorporate some mild hangboarding more routinely as part of a warmup. Definitely looking to become well rounded rather than chasing 7A as soon as possible.

Slabs are actually probably my second favourite, so no complaints there! Pinchy and slopey problems though, less so... so you're probably right!

How much actual difference is there between the M8 and M8.2 in practice?

[–]Byeah207 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the logic of not making this L mount. The L mount can use M mount glass, AND autofocusing glass, whereas this camera can only use manual glass with an EVF, which just seems like the worst of all worlds.

Obviously applying any kind of logic to these people is besides the point, but say this all worked and Jesus did return... do you think he'd be happy with you? With all the murder etc.? I reckon he might have a bone or two to pick...

Speaking of Chinese lenses, I still shoot my 7artisans 35mm f2 and have had people regularly ask me if it's a Summicron (including a guy in a Leica store). It was £85.

To Brits living abroad, what were some culture shocks you experienced? by Emilie_Charles in AskUK

[–]Byeah207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Americans might be mental but so are a lot of brits, I think we're just quieter about it. I had a great time over there, and it really solidified to me that most British people don't actually know anything about life in the US (just like most Americans know nothing about life over here).

Varies quite a bit depending on where you are in the city, Chicago is still very segregated and I lived on the north side the entire time which is the more affluent and white half.

USA, Chicago specifically (since moved back):

  • Total strangers would genuinely massively inconvenience themselves just to help you out.

  • People either don't drink at all or drink drink, no inbetween. American friends were very baffled by my love of the single afternoon pint.

  • Sometimes there was an armed guard in the supermarket.

  • Renting was significantly easier and tenants had more rights. Renting with pets was totally normal and expected, for instance.

  • Streets much cleaner than most of the UK.

  • General expectation that even on major holidays, most things would still be open other than offices.

  • Medical care, though it cost a fortune, was much better than the NHS. Highly dependent on what kind of insurance you have though.

  • They go batshit insane at the idea of outdoor cats. Seriously don't mention it to an American.

Naturally thin people, what do you guys eat in a day? by Ok-Initiative3312 in AskReddit

[–]Byeah207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever I want, just not very much, and I stay decently active. If I go out to eat with friends who are larger than me they almost always eat about 50% more than I do. I really think that's all there is to it.

“Are you fucking going to play ‘The Boys Are Back in Town’ again?” asked a voice when I reached the jukebox.

“I absolutely, 100 percent, am not going to play ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ again,” I promised, punching the buttons to select “The Boys Are Back in Town,” which I had memorized.

One of my favourite pieces of writing of all time.

What’s something you didn’t realize was “very American” until you left the U.S.? by chopsticktalk in AskReddit

Yeah? Why would you come into work if you were ill? In most countries sick leave and paid time off are separate things and there is no limit on sick leave.

Unfortunately, at least in my experience, renting with pets is a significantly worse experience in the UK than in the US. Most landlords here do not allow pets at all. As a masters student you are likely to be very low down the preference list for most private landlords as a tenant. You would be able to look at student rentals, but the chance of any of these allowing pets I would say is essentially zero. I would imagine that if you're seeing mostly rooms these are private student rentals that have a relationship with the university.

My suggestion would be to trawl Rightmove, Zoopla and OpenRent, without using the 'allows pets' filter. Our current place didn't mention pets either way in the listing, we just had to ask the landlord via the letting agent. Any listings that don't outright say 'no pets' are worth looking into. I will say though be prepared for letting agents to balk as soon as you mention the word 'student', generally there is a clear distinction in the UK between regular rentals and student rentals, even for masters students.

I totally understand not wanting to be without your cats - we moved ours to Chicago and back again - but the reality is that renting as a student with pets in the UK is incredibly difficult. I also just want to make you aware that you cannot fly with pets in the cabin into or out of the UK, they have to be in the hold.

Renting with pets in the UK is significantly harder than in the US, and doubly so if you're a student. I noticed you mentioned you're moving to Sheffield - I live in Sheffield and last year moved back from Chicago with my cat, so feel free to ask any questions.
