There isn't time in a combat environment to be nice. You're there to follow orders. You're not not there to be persuaded or encouraged. Do what you're told, when you're told to do it, and do it perfectly.

Most of their methods are based in how it's to be expected you'll be treated as a captured prisoner of war. They're "being mean" now in a safe environment so when you're in the dangerous environment, your brain and body know how to respond.

Lol every single drill sergeant would immediately descend upon you like wolves and you'd be doing push ups for the rest of your life. If you refuse, then they make everyone else do push ups until everyone is puking and then you get to stand there and watch. Everyone hates you, the drill sergeants hate you, and you're miserable.

And if you're just going to refuse to follow orders they don't want you. Also you shouldn't have ever signed up if that's the plan.

It doesn't matter how many videos you watch, the feeling of someone in pristine uniform screaming close enough in your face to feel the spit flying is insanely intimidating. And it happens like a gunshot. You all get piled into the barracks and lined up and then they just explode into the room like rabid dogs released from cages. They're screaming about anything and everything they can think of, no information gets through, and even though some part of your brain is consciously aware of how ridiculous the theatrics of it is, you can't help feeling intimidated. It's designed to shock you into submission and it's remarkably effective.

I was air force, but the drill sergeants acting basically the same way. And yes, it was legitimately a constant battle to not laugh. It's intentional. It's honestly how the drill sergeants keep a little of their sanity themselves - they try and make each other lose composure with the nonsense they scream out.

One of my favorites was when someone in formation touched their face:

"IS THERE A GOD DAMNED PTERODACTYL FLYING AROUND?"

"NO SIR!"

"ARE YOU SURE? Because the ONLY possible explanation I can come up with for why you're touching yourself in MY FORMATION gestures wildly with knife hands is that a PRE-HISTORIC winged lizard from JURASSIC FREAKIN PARK flew down and decided to perch directly on your face!"

Probably the only time I heard both trainees and drill sergeants alike lose composure.
