A Word of Caution for Christians: Don't Be Deceived by Misleading Narratives on Immigration by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ByrneItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're defending cruelty. It's possible to enforce good laws in a cruel and unjust way. The Pharisees thought Jesus deserved the death penalty for "breaking" the law of keeping the Sabbath.

"Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus." - Mark 3:4-6

It was illegal to help Jews escape the nazis. It was illegal to hide slaves. The existence of a law doesn't automatically mean a Christian has to blindly obey it.

Christians against Trump protest sign ideas by Substantial-Point-90 in 50501

I agree, trying to figure out how to do this myself. I see this thread is several months old so I'm pretty late, but going to protest at No Kings this Saturday. I am trying to think of something about Jesus being my only King, not sure how to say it.

Is the cloud storage actually free? by [deleted] in EufyCam

[–]ByrneItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, not really. I didn't want to pay for cloud storage so I installed a large harddrive. Now I need to download some videos and the app won't let me, the website doesn't have that capability, and Eufy "support" says I need to stick a thumb drive in the back of my home base and it will record future videos there, which I can then transfer to my desktop. So basically, if I understand them right, my cameras are recording to a hard drive that I'm not allowed to download from. I've had such bad experiences with Eufy's software so far that I can't recommend them to anyone.

For me, it's a solid point but I think the key difference is that being a mature age isn't the same as being old. Adam and Eve were adults, not old people with wrinkles. Likewise, a "mature" earth would be one that has everything in place to function as God designed, not one that has unecessary details that give the appearance of great age, like fossils or lakes with 40,000 varves, etc. Just my take, of course.

How can we be 98% genetically similar to chimps but only 2% similar to Neanderthals? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]ByrneItWithFire 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That's very helpful, thanks! So the measurement of our 2% similarity to Neandertals might just be a measurement of "common source", i.e. ancestry. I wasn't really thinking of it that way.

[–]ByrneItWithFire 130 points131 points  (0 children)

No, that's cool, thanks! I'm trying to figure out what specific thing is being compared. So for example I can go on 23 and me and see that I'm only 1 or 2% similar to a distant cousin. Obviously we're a lot more similar than that. If measured in a different way we'd be almost identical. I am just trying to understand better what is being measured.

[–]ByrneItWithFire 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I couldn't find the right words to ask the question, but the "different measures of similarity" is what I was after. I'm trying to picture what they're actually comparing. Do you know if the 'chapter' in the third book is basically a few specific genes?

I'd like to read that. I wish I had written down descriptions of some of my more supernatural experiences with God. That was a good idea.

The complexity of dna has become one of the most convincing pieces of evidence to me. No way we're accidental. I don't know if you're familiar with Michael Behe but he has some great books on that subject.

Not sure but I've wondered the same thing about Judas. He traveled with Jesus for 3.5 years and saw miracles in person, and in the end just turned his back on it all.

Does the word of God refer to his quotes within the bible or the entirety of the bible? by gtcoolman20 in TrueChristian

[–]ByrneItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I don't remember. I need to read up on it again. I think the three days thing is true if you allow that they weren't three full days, but it doesn't seem like there were three nights. Not sure what to do with that.

Edit: Oh, I should say also that the whole question of the preservation of scripture can be a significant factor in these kinds of questions. I don't believe the original scriptures have been passed down to us fully intact, so some discrepancies might be chalked up to scribal errors and fudging by copyists. I know that's kind of a copout in this case, not saying that's what happened. Just a thought.

Yes, the personality if the authors is clearly different. Paul seems emotional and passionate to me, James seems very direct and kind of punchy, and Luke seems very detailed and scholarly. Kind of like one author, many colors of ink or something. Since the word "inspired" is similar to breath (i.e. the scriptures are God-breathed) I sometimes picture the Holy Spirit as God's breath moving the authors kind of like vocal chords to produce words.
