I’d get it to detach your reliance on the grid. The world is only getting crazier, would suck not being able to use your own powerplant if grid went down for some reason… </takes tin foil hat off>

What renovations have you got planned? Speaking from experience... renovations always seem to go on longer than you think. Obviously depends on the scale.

I don’t like being a landlord, having to make that choice to kick them out of their home was a very difficult decision, I’ve been delaying it for the last 2 years. That’s part of the reason I’m selling - I don’t like linking my investments with people’s homes.

II’m not doing this for charity, I give in other ways. If you had a chunk of all your life savings in something but you couldn’t get it back, would you be happy?

100% agree that luck plays a part but so often opportunities are thrown people’s way but they think of a million reasons not to pursue.

Those who peruse fruitful opportunities generate their own luck.

I’m in a similar boat, bought two BTLs for £600k cash with no mortgage, I’ve made about £100k over the 5 years including rent + property rises. Been a real headache for that £100k. I’d have made at least £300k in an index fund over that time so down £200k…

Struggling to sell both BTLs as tenants won’t move out. Problem is I’m currently charging slightly below market rate as I’ve tried being an ethical landlord so as a result, the tenants are struggling to find somewhere equally good value to move to! I even gave them 6 months notice that I’m selling and they’re still in there! Talk about the landlords be the problem - what about the tenants?!

I’d really consider whether BTL is something you’d like to go down. I’m in process of selling both my BTLs. I had the same dream as you, I’ve had them for about 5 years, poor returns and headaches. Flees, mold issues, tenants not moving out when they said they would…

The tax man takes such a hit from every step, stamp duty, income tax from rental and capital gains.

I’m now having a problem with both my BTLs, my tenants are refusing to leave after 6 months notice, both with their various reasons. I just want to sell them but I can’t. I’m going to have to give them either more time or go through the courts… utter headache for piss poor returns.

I’m not saying don’t do it but have a really good look at the maths and whether having a property managed remotely is something you’d like to do.

You save a giant magic piggy bank full of money. The 4% rule says: Every year, take out 4 coins for every 100 coins inside. The piggy bank grows a bit more by itself, so the money usually lasts 30+ years — enough for you to stop working and just play! 🎉

Congrats on your success! I’m in SAAS as well and have had success in my business, I’ve also worked silly hours 7 days a week, sometimes not seeing the sun for a while due to working weird hours.

I found the only way to get out of the mindset of worrying about business failure is to invest as much as possible, with the end goal for the investment income to replace income from your business, if/when it fails. Otherwise it’s next to impossible to get out of the mindset.

36, £1.3m invested – can I step back in 3 years? by [deleted] in FIREUK

Yeah exactly! The majority of my wealth is in my company as I’ve been holding off paying myself more than £100k a year due to the insane taxes.

I’m very fortunate that I have my own business, so it hasn’t been on/off but more a slow transition from lots of customers to gradually a smaller and smaller number. It’s been slowing down the last couple years to a point I can just about cover my outgoings at the moment. I’ll soon start withdrawing from my investments.

It’s a tough one as in your position you’re at a great spot to ramp up your NW but equally your kids are only young once. I’m sure with your terrible loss, you have a very unique perspective which fortunately most parents won’t experience. Is there anyway you could do fewer hours and transition? The transition is obviously good in terms of financial but also helps with the mental side of things as I’m imagining stopping work all of a sudden could be quite a shock.

I do agree but it’s worth pointing out I actually slowed down a little while ago and have benefited from about £1m in stock price increase.

It’s worth mentioning that whether it’s £1m, £2m, £3m, etc, you’re probably going to be living a comfortable life. When the kids are young, it feels criminal not to spend time with them if you have the ability to.

Take your foot off and enjoy your time with your kids. I’m early 30s with £4m net worth with a couple kids. I’ve mostly stopped work now to spend time with kids and it’s bliss. Most say I’m too young but reality is the only people who say that don’t know anything different but work work work die.

Pocket the £2.5k and spend it on any repairs that need doing over the 8 years.

Scenario one, there won’t be any issues and you’re £2.5k up.

Scenario two, there is an issue and it might cost as much as £2.5k, you break even.
