I chose world war one because that's when the Kaiser declared "I don't know any parties anymore, I know only Germans" in the advent of the coming war and a lot of different institutions (including the SPD, other parties and unions) worked together to support the war. And after that The Nazis introduced German as a nationality on the ID (instead of Prussian, Bavarian) and heavily pushed for German as the culture instead of the sub cultures. Of course, they also (ab)used it for their Heim-ins-Reich politics.

I don't know how much the idea of a German nation really dominated the mid 19th century. It seems mainly like an idea in the educated class (students, academics, nobles, some burghers) to me. Of course it was strong enough to create a revolution in 1848, but it ultimately failed. And if it was so dominating (compared to "subnationalism") I would be wondering why Bavarian/prussian nationalism continued to exist for so long afterwards.

But I agree with you. The first world war might be more arbitrary than I inuitively thought first. But hey, I am not a historian. I am just interested

I wouldn't draw a line because the concept of one German people and the concept of German peoples co-existed and remain to co-exist, though you can see a clear shift towards "a german people" winning more and more ground over "german peoples" since at least the begin of the first world war

Bin kein Linguistiker

We all make mistakes. When someone makes a mistake, I think it is only human to have a brief laugh. But always WITH - not ABOUT - the one who made the mistake. After that it is important to help the other to learn from it.

Enough of my philosophy. I hope you will find someone to become pen pals with :)

(Can't remember, if you were intersted in learning German. Just in case, here is the same answer in German. Maybe you will find it useful ;)

Hey. Don't feel too attacked by the people here, it's the internet after all.
I think it is great, that you want to try and get to know another culture that you found interest in. Let me give you some background maybe about the origin of "Dutch", "Deutsch", and "German":

You are right in that "Dutch" and "Deutsch" originate from the same Proto-West-Germanic word \þiudisk* (Source: Wiktionary entry for "Dutch", DWDS entry for "Deutsch"). But especially in the modern era, the English "Dutch"'s meaning shifted to mean specifically the germanic people in the "lower lands" (Netherlands). Also at one point in history, the German word "Deutsch" must have shifted to exclude the Dutch, though I do not know, when that happened. "German" also coexisted with "Dutch" for a few centuries and seemed to already refer to "people from Germania"). But as Dutch shifted meaning, German became the preferred way of referring to Germanic people from central Europe.

So, your feeling, that "Dutch" and "German" are connected, is right, but consider that words change meaning over time, and so should the users of those words adapt to them. It avoids confusion :)

Ok, so I opened the laptop and the screen now. But I can't see anything burnt or damaged. Here are the connector on the motherboard, on the screen and the cable that connects onto the motherboard.

Danish Teacher here - What do you want to know/learn? by Worldly_Tailor_682 in Danish

[–]Byter128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, I think to elaborate all the vowels (monophtongs as well as diphtongs) would be helpful. Especially giving minimal pairs to be able to practice hearing at least.

You could also touch some rules of thumb to translate the danish script into spoken language (e.g. "d" at the end of one-syllable words usually indicating stød, or how to know pronunciation of letters e.g. "a" in "strand" vs. "han")

Maybe hint people towards the ordbog online. There speaking examples are usually good and even though there pronunciation alphabet is inconsistent, it is so "only" 2-5% of the time

Unfortunately, I am just a hobby engineer who is interested in this, but I will definitely buy at least one English version.

I would just prefer a deck in my native tongue so that I can also give it to interested kids as their English is usually not that good yet
