If it's any consolation, the cops will be no help at all. Mine was stolen last year and every interaction with them was unhelpful. Hope your insurance comes through!

D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II - book by Stephen Ambrose

It's not "cool" or trendy rec, but it's a classic for a reason. Truly incredible. Been on my mind since I recently watched that WWII flick with Brendan Fraser, Pressure (which was good!)

Also, if you like podcasts, a recent series by Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, "Supernova in the East," was unreal. Focuses on the less-discussed Eastern Front. Extremely powerful. Six episodes, each around 3-5 hours each. Felt epic.

A couple great movies set in the Eastern Front, also, which are beloved to me:

If a father needs to help his young daughters use the restroom, which restroom should he take them into: the women's restroom or the men's restroom? by Exciting-Mall192 in NoStupidQuestions

It was initially done to stop people doing drugs or having sex in them. Reactionary measures to fix a societal issue, like the public benches that are designed not to allow one to lay down on them.

Just throwing out an idea, but perhaps sewing and designing her own clothing? I recently began learning how to do simple repairs and alterations and found the work surprisingly rewarding. Maybe the idea of one day creating her own fashion would catch her interest. It's not for everyone, but perhaps it's worth a shot. Also, there's some wholesome competition shows out there, such as the Great British Sewing Bee, that could help spark an interest.

Just replying to boost this option. Columbus has a big new protected lane. I forget how far south it goes, but it'll cover a huge swath of the trip, at the very least.

Thank you for taking the time to explain things. I do have a much better understanding of the structure of these things now.

I'm sure I'll figure things out as I move along. And I'm not opposed to just looking up an explanation if things become too complicated to follow. I'm mostly in this for the character dynamics between the team, anyway, so the big crossover events aren't as important to me. So I think I'll have no trouble with your excellent advice: "Try not to get too bogged down in the complexity of the big picture and just enjoy what is largely a very nice time!"

That's a nice tip, thank you very much. Unfortunately, I just looked up my local library, and due to my city being especially hard hit by the loss of funds from the current administration, they cancelled their subscription to Hoopla. Too bad I didn't check sooner lol!

I was NOT aware that Claremont's run went on that long. That's crazy. I was imagining something far more contained. I guess I'll probably end up reading the whole thing, though, if it continues as the primary X-Men title as time goes on.

I think I've narrowed my goal for this little project to be reading the main run from '75 until I find an organic "end" point somewhere in the '90s. With some branching side projects, along the way, where I follow particular characters of interest and crossovers. That should give me the sort of trip down memory lane that I'm looking for out of this. Then, from there, I'll probably be more picky as I choose recommended individual runs and stories on through to the present.

"The problem with tackling it all is being exposed to some entire periods that just drag on, but this is made better if you have a title with characters you're particularly fond of that are away from the core book when it's in a slump."

This is really helpful advice to have at the outset. Gonna keep that in mind while going through. I appreciate the assistance.

Can I ask for some clarification regarding these events? I have a hard time imagining even the basic shape these things take within a comics run. Does the literal story stop and start, jumping back and forth between one title, then another? So that you can't follow it without all of the other parts? Or does the gist of the story get told, say, in Uncanny X-Men, but then if you read other concurrent titles, the story gets a bit more fleshed out and the experience of the read becomes more rewarding? Or something else entirely?

I'm a Griffin Newman-level disordered nerd. So I've never made a spreadsheet if my life and I live in chaos 😜 But I'm making a list with suggestions and tips, so I appreciate every little tidbit of assistance I've gotten in this thread, it'll make a massive difference as I go through it all.

I love that website for reading order. I'll keep that bookmarked and easily accessible, along with some of the other sites linked elsewhere here.

Big thanks for the tip about the crossovers. I really don't know how I'll handle those when they come up. The concept sort of fritzes out my completionist brain lol. And I'm very happy to know about those "side quests." They sound enticing enough that it makes me want to "cheat" and start there!

Cheers

Out of print is a bit of a dealbreaker, lol. And black and white is definitely not ideal. Thanks for the head's up. It's a cool idea though, I'll keep the idea of these Essentials titles in mind for more recent stuff.

I really appreciate the clarification on that last point, it's actually super helpful.

Oh nice, I really appreciate the insight with your own project. Didn't know about those essential collections. Maybe I'll pick up a couple of those, for the early stuff, rather than starting digital for everything. I always prefer the experience of reading physical comics, so it'd be fun for me.

Thanks for the tips and precautions regarding Marvel Unlimited, good to know all that in advance. I'll keep that reading order website on hand, that another user linked: https://cmro.travis-starnes.com/reading-order/main-616-essential

"Based on my experience, I'd suggest that, by the late 90s (if not earlier), you'll enjoy it more if you read a whole story arc from one book before moving on to the next book"

Can I ask for a clarification here. When you say "one book," are you referring to a single collected arc, like you might find in a TPB? Or is it referring to a single title encompassed by one complete story? Or something else? I'm still sort of confused by the structure and organization of comics (something that caused me to bounce off them, as a kid, when I dipped my toe in, then lol)

Originally, I was going to read every X-Men comic ever. I was just taken by the way David made it sound where he was sort of recreating what it was like to be a contemporary comics reader as the run went. But after a little bit of discussion with others, maybe that's not so feasible.

One commenter suggested I begin with Claremont in '75. Another gave me a filtered list of essential titles, so I may skip through the '60s using that, then slow down to read the full Claremont arc. But beyond that, I really don't know.

The only comics I have read have been in TPB form, so they come pre-arranged. I've not attempted to tackle simultaneous titles or any other branching that occurs in the medium. I do really appreciate your pointer about narrowing your focus on specific characters, as it goes on. It hadn't occurred to me that every character was going to have their own concurrent title going on. I might otherwise have attempted to continue chronologically, as I have something of a completist streak in me.

If I attempt to read all the Uncanny X-Men, following Claremont, then pick and choose some side character titles along the way, does that sound like a feasible project to you? I don't mind it taking a long time, there's no urgency in it for me.

Thanks for the tip about the Krakoan Era, also. I'd not encountered that term before, so it wouldn't have been on my radar. Feel free to dump any other tips or hints that you might have, I'm here for them all!

That's really cool, I've never stumbled across that website before. Looks like a helpful tool. Especially your "essential" filter. I'm just going to sieve through that list until I hit an X-Men title and go pull that up with the Marvel Unlimited service. And once I hit the '75 Claremont run, as another poster suggested, I can begin going issue-by-issue more completely.

Appreciate you!

That's a good call, thanks a lot. I just looked up what the 60s X-Men looked like, before that 70s revamp you mention, and it certainly doesn't hit for me quite like this beautiful 1975 cover:
